Mo Lawal apologizes for tweet about Nevada commissioner

On "No Holds Barred" radio and later in a video with CSN Bay Area, Mo Lawal apologized to Nevada Athletic Commissioner Pat Lundvall for calling her a slur for women on his Twitter account.

"I was out of line for calling the woman the 'b' word and I was wrong for that," Lawal told CSN California. "I was kind of mad about the comments, I was offended by the comments made towards me and I was out of line. I was too emotional. I apologize for that. With that being said, I still feel that I was offended, but I'm in the wrong for what I said."

Lawal has not changed his stance on Lundvall's tone towards him. In the end, it does not matter if anyone else but Lawal found her questioning racist, because it was directed at Lawal. Based on his experiences in his life, he found it to be racist and was offended, and he has a right to feel that way. Lashing out against Lundvall with that language wasn't the best move, which is why he apologized.

Apologizing was a smart thing for Lawal to do because he can now move on from this incident. It won't continue to hang over his head as he continues to rehabilitate from knee surgery and a life-threatening staph infection.

The Social Customer #SCRM12 | Our Social Times

It will also highlight innovative customer engagement and social CRM strategies and techniques.

Barry be adding notes into the article below throughout the day? and follow the #SCRM12 hashtag for tweets!

The Rise of the Social Customer
Guy Stephens ? Technology Consultant, CapGemini

The rise of the Social Business, its a approach and culture that needs to be adopted, The Cluetrain Manifesto is a must read book if you?re going to attempt it. Guy Stephens explains how social media has been adopted by consumers and how this is changing their relationship with companies. Citing examples of how businesses are changing and adapting their internal structures and processes to enhance their services and meet customer expectations. Making your business Customer Centric is not about technology, but about a cultural shift in the business, this culture and approach will lead you to implement Social technology, but it must follow the shift?

Nice point: ?Before you make these changes for Social Business, ignore the technology, look at objectives for the business first? #scrm12

We?d make a huge step forward if we apply the Conversation Prism to Customer Service rather than just marketing #scrm12

How Marketing & Customer Service Can Work Together

Martin Hill-Wilson, Director, Brainfood Consulting

Businesses have a huge disconnect between departments, we still operate in silo?s despite working so hard (well at least talking so hard) for so long? We can only get get over this when we finally work as a business, together, with a single agenda. Are we finally over the bad old days of over promising and under servicing customers? When Marketing and Customer Service fail in this way, the value of customer engagement is lost. Why do we manage these two closely aligned activities separately? What does effective collaboration look like? And, can it really happen? Customer Centric might even allow the business to empower its customer to become a voice in the customer service department ? Consumer Managed Q&A forums?

Sky take 50-75million calls from it?s customers ? Its not hard to see the value of reducing the volume with Social #scrm12

Smart businesses map the customer journey, look at potential ?Social? touch points & develop a common single agenda #scrm12

Panel Discussion: Who Should ?Own? Social?
Moderator ? Neville Hobson (Communications Consultant), Katy Howell (Managing Director, Immediate Future), Nick Sharples (Corporate Communications Consultant), Martin Hill-Wilson (Brainfood Consulting), Aaron Stewart (Product Marketing Manager, KANA Software)

Moderated by Neville, the discussion floats around the topic of who owns Social. No single person in a business, or no single department should own Social, it should be a communication and engagement channel throughout the company. The higher you are in business the more you experience disconnect, a CEO may provide guidance of strategy, but every customer touchpoint can be empowered to use Social. In most organisations, Marketing has led the way in social media adoption and usage. Some would say, though, that ?social? is more attuned to the goals of Customer Services ? in which a focus on generating trust and delivering value is not polluted by a requirement to generate leads. I think the answer to the discussion results similar to a comment Neville experienced on his blog, We?re asking the wrong question! But there should be a department that take lead to pass things through the companies eco-system ? is this the Social Media command centre?

Social media needs someone to ?Lead? it not ?Own? it within an organisation says @nicksharples1 #scrm12 #custserv

Customers don?t own ur social media they inform it. Do you know ur customer journey via @katyhowell #scrm12

Insight is great, but it?s useless unless it is actionable, the business still needs the attitude & culture to make things happen #scrm12

Control never really there, a construct that orgs lulled their customers/themselves into believing. Customers finally waking up! #scrm12

Everything Everywhere Case Study: Leveraging Social Customer Service to increase Customer Loyalty
Ben Kay ? Head of Digital Strategy and Adoption, Everything Everywhere

A practical case study about the work of TMobile/Orange. Customers made 1.33Bn Calls, 5.5Bn Texts and used 326Bn Kilobytes of Data, they use the data services rather than a call even to ask about Customer Service problems. Listen, Listen, Listen and keep Listening. Everything Everywhere wanted to find out about the brand conversation ? who, why, where. Then look at how to we manage this? Ben has an interesting and rather conflicting statement to bust the myth of reducing calls ? he says when you have 27 million customers the phone will always ring, maybe we can marginally shift this. We enjoyed a rather honest and critical look at how and why Everything Everywhere participate in Social.

How do customers seek service? 77% search, 71% go to company site, 48% read reviews, 13% use social networks (Mintel) @Benjamin_Kay #scrm12

Some Orange/TMobile stats: Customers made 1.33Bn Calls, 5.5Bn Texts and used 326Bn Kilobytes of Data #SCRM12 << All about the data?!

Panel Discussion: Measuring the Value and Effectiveness of Customer Communities
Moderator ? Luke Brynley-Jones (Our Social Times), Bian Salins (Head of Social Media Innovation, BT Customer Service), Vincent Boon (Community Manager, GiffGaff/Telefonica), Guy Stephens (Cap Gemini)

Value and Effectiveness is one of those metrics that is hard to quantify. We look at cost reduction, renewals (sales), sentiment, net promoter scores etc. Customers are increasingly being asked to resolve their problems through interaction in communities, but do these really work? How can companies measure the effectiveness of their customer communities and what techniques can be used to ensure that knowledge is effectively shared and stored, that problems are resolved and that customer satisfaction levels are maintained? GiffGaff have achieved 85% of support successfully by use of Social and Web support. Again, clarification that Customer Services starts at Google? Your customer know so much about your products, more than you might yourself as a business. Bian almost wins quote of the day with ?I?ve leant more from customers than anyone In the business?.

Giffgaff originally started in social to reduce customer service costs. It has since evolved into a way of living! #scrm12

Frustrated community customers can end up being your brand ambassadors by getting the answers they need and being satisfied #scrm12

#scrm12 ?I?ve leant more from customers than anyone In the business?. Great quote from Bian Salins

The Future of Social Customer
Frank Eliason ? VP Social Media, Citi

We?re joined by Frank via Webinar (phew, the internet worked!), he?s the voice behind @ComcastCares he successfully demonstrated that social media could enable a large corporation to build genuine relationships with their customers. At Citi he says he is focused on ?building a lifetime of trust? between the bank and its customers. In this live video presentation Frank offers his insights into how large organisations should approach social customer engagement. In his whitty manner Frank talks us through the traditional process of customer complaints, it?s tough business. Social Media allows consumers to enthusiastically complain in a public domain, we?re connecting with frustration in a public environment so it has become a priority we need to tackle. Business want Social Service, Consumers want the product to work. For 20 years call centers have slowly become huge cost centers, and therefore sales centres ? consumer do not want to be sold to in this environment, but it happens ? these are key things to think about in Social Service. Social Media brings out Passion, so driving change in a brand that witnesses bad sentiment online can quickly turn it round and those same people that are passionate will continue to show their now positive passion. Start using a smart social listening program to drive change in your business and what you?ll find that you?ll dramatically reduce the need for Customer Service across the business regardless of if you participate in Social ? look at Apple.

Everything about the call centre is about getting you off the phone via @frankeliason #scrm12

?CE (Customer experience) + P (Passion) = Social Media Success? > Formula by @askciti #SCRM12

Business want Social Service, Consumers want the product to work #SCRM12

British Gas Case Study: Implementing a Cohesive Strategy for Customer Engagement
Lloyd Salmons, Managing Director, Outside Line and Laura Price ? Social Media Manager, British Gas

In this co-presented session British Gas and agency, Outside Line, explain how they employ social media to generate conversation and social currency around their brand. They demonstrate how they brought together different platforms and teams to create one cohesive strategy, how they have tackled internal and external challenges, and how they use social media to try to mitigate negative sentiment, so prominent in the energy industry. The challenge was to create a eco-system of positive sentiment and perception around the brand, so that the customer journey through to support was one that was reinforced with positive messages about the brand. This calls back to the message from earlier talks where we discussed the customer journey starting more than often in Search, the first steps in this journey are just as important as the interactions later in the process whether they?re call center of socially enabled. British Gas have quantified each view of support YouTube videos to an ?80 saving (call time, home visits, parts). There is a huge process of learning to interact with customer via different means of technology.

Half of British gas mentions every day are #custserv issues. #scrm12

British Gas have quantified each view of support channel on YouTube videos to an ?80 saving (call time, home visits, parts etc) #SCRM12

Integrating Social Media into Traditional Customer Services
Carolyn Blunt ? People Development Consultant, Real Results

So how did we get here? Hear Carolyn Blunt explains how customer services has been organised, trained and managed for the past 10 years and how social media is starting to impact on it. She explores what this shift means and what can be done to stay ahead of the curve, to maintain and improve the customer experience and to keep staff working confidently and efficiently. The shift in Social Contact Centers represents a huge cultural change for the providers to the industry, they?re fighting for ownership of a platform and technology with the marketing folks. Its becoming a case of be pro-active or die. Goldern Rules: 1) Consistence across channels (Social and Calls) 2) Never Argue with customers 3) Avoid the Chardonnay Tweeters. Creating a sub-team for the Social task force is a great idea, look at Twitter / Facebook but also we?re seeing the rise of the forums.

Carolyn Blunt is gen X and still wants to phone. Give your customer choice in how they want to converse with you #scrm12

Three responses to social customer, passive, pounce or proactive. Latter is best says @CarolynBlunt #scrm12

Implementing Multi-Channel Social Customer Services
Richard McCrossan (Strategic Business Director , Genesys)

Richard is a huge advocate of Customer Service, ultimately we need to give our customers options. The do not necessarily want to develop a relationship with your brand, they want a good product and they want to quickly resolve any problems in a quick and efficient manner. Customer Service isnt a huge factor in Customer Loyalty, but it?s a major factor in Customer Dis-Loyalty. When we have identified a problem we need to leverage customer service tools, identify the relationship you have with that consumer, deal with the issue there or take it offline, then close the loop.

Being able to empower customer service to move between social and phone can be very powerful #scrm12

Instant messaging or ?Live Chat? customer satisfaction ratings much higher than traditional mediums such as the telephone #scrm12

Customers don?t want a relationship with an organisation, they want the benefits of it via @dossan #scrm12

Panel Discussion: Does Social Customer Service Improve the User Experience?
Moderator ? Maria McCann (Head of Customer Services, Spotify), Dominic Sparkes (Managing Director, Tempero), Amanda Brown (PR Manager, First Direct), David Hughes (Director of User Experience Expedia Affiliate Network), Charlotte Garfield (ACCA).

Nicely put together wrap up of the day. If we took a step back to no Social, would the world be a better place. Consensus on the panel is that we?re enjoying the changing market, brands enjoy the advocacy gained through social and as volumes grow for major brand divertative measures such as social media are ultimately making things possible. Predictions: Sentiment aware websites, faster product development, Mobile Customer Service.

Has Social Anxiety Got You by the Short Hairs ? ? Health and Fitness

If social anxiety has you paralysed, you?re missing out on so many good experiences. Would you like to help yourself lose some of those horrible fears? You actually can, with the new acupressure self-help technique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques).

Lots of other people have reported boosting their self-confidence through EFT, and finding out how much richer life becomes.

EFT tapping is simple EFT is a technique which needs you to gently fingertap on key acupuncture points on your face and body while you briefly focus on a specific problem.

What this does is simply balance your meridian energy system, so it?s totally safe. But results can be awesome, surprising, and often fast.

?How on Earth could tapping help me??

What is unexpected is the huge variety of life improvements you could achieve through focussing this fast technique on various aspects of your life. You can read accounts online and in EFT books by countless people who have already helped themselves this way.

A little effort in learning, and in using this technique when you?re not feeling great, can open up so much permanent improvement in your social anxiety problems, that in a while, it?s likely you?ll find that you can?t believe yourself.

?What do I have to do??

Let?s take a hypothetical case.

When teenage Jim?s out in public, he can?t stop thinking that everyone is looking at him and judging him. He ?knows? that none of those people will like what they see, he can read their minds.

But he?s desperate to go on a date with a lovely new girl he did manage to have a conversation with. He?s agonising now about how it will all go wrong. He?ll be tongue-tied, fall over his feet, make a fool of himself. She?ll be disgusted and brush him off. Then he?ll be back to Square 1, which he finds an uncomfortable place rather than an exciting challenge.

As an EFT tapper, Jim would list separately every fear he has about the date, and he would rate the intensity of each fear 0-10, 10 being the greatest.

Then he would apply the basic 30-second tapping routine he has learned, to each fear separately. He would aim at reaching 0 for each count.

As his stress lowers on each point, he would automatically find that his negative thinking improves, because that?s how it works. And it could work in minutes. For example, focusing on his thought, ?Even though I know I?ll make a fool of myself?? while he taps, Jim would soon find himself thinking, ?Well, maybe not all the time??

As he continues the tapping routine, he could easily lower this fear, and even reach 0.

At that point he?s likely to feel optimistic that even if he is awkward at some point in the date, it could be something so small that she won?t even notice. Or maybe he feels now that he won?t look awkward at all. And maybe she?s feeling nervous too, so as he has stopped feeling so fearful himself, he might concentrate on helping her feel easier.

And so on, right through the range of his paralysing fears.

What?s the likely result? New confidence! He?s now willing to take a chance! At the very least, this date will give him more experience around girls. And she does want to go on this date with him. Go, man!

A deeper cause for social anxiety

The above approach is EFT?s help method for current fears and doubts, and it?s priceless. Even a small improvement is valuable.

But a deeper approach is possible. What has caused Jim?s extreme nervousness? There is more than adolescent worries going on here. Something or someone undermined Jim?s confidence in himself and in life, much earlier. But that does not have to be a life sentence.

As an energy method, EFT can also identify and neutralise past causes, although Jim might need more experienced EFT help to make this permanent improvement.

Social anxiety causes misery, but now you can do something about it yourself, in an easy, simple way that has a high success rate. And no-one has to know what you?re doing! EFT is tops for anxiety and stress.

News: New Verizon Offering Helps Enterprises Conduct Video ...

March 27, 2012

NEW YORK - The growing popularity of information technology innovation has accelerated demand from enterprises for the latest communications capabilities on a variety of devices, platforms and networks. To help meet this demand, Verizon is launching a new offering that enables businesses and government agencies to conduct secure, high-quality video meetings across private or public networks on multiple video platforms - including telepresence and video conferencing -- on desktops and tablets.

The innovative solution, Verizon Open Video Communications, makes it possible to link video systems that were previously incompatible and to create a virtually limitless open web of video communications and end points.

The solution, which will roll out in second-quarter 2012, will enable Verizon customers to communicate via video beyond corporate firewalls and proprietary video platforms and networks to a larger, community of business-to-business partners and customers. With Verizon Open Video Communications, businesses will be able to instantaneously add participants to a meeting and the service will be delivered with usage-based pricing.

"One of the biggest challenges in video adoption by large-business and government customers is the ability to communicate beyond the four walls of their business," said Mike Palmer, vice president of product strategy for Verizon Enterprise Solutions. "With the deployment of 4G LTE and a strong desire for workers to employ in the workplace commonplace apps such as video, this offering is an important step toward Verizon's goal of enabling our customers to use any device to connect to the people and information they need to work most effectively."

"Being able to connect across telepresence or traditional video conferencing networks to potentially millions of new locations greatly expands the value of video to customers, so they can more quickly see a return on their video investment," Palmer said.

The new capability expands the reach of Verizon's immersive video - or telepresence -- offering across the company's global Private Internet protocol networking platform, currently available in more than 170 markets across the globe. Telepresence replicates face-to-face interactions so realistically that it feels as though everyone is in the same room -- even though they may be thousands of miles apart.

(View a video of Verizon's visual communications solutions here.)

Verizon, including its predecessor companies, has more than 30 years of experience as a leading provider of unified collaboration and communications (UC&C) services, enabling organizations to effectively collaborate for increased productivity while reducing costs and carbon emissions associated with business travel. IJburg: new island, new neighbourhood, new education. For IJburg College, an opportunity to structure the education as effectively as possible in the new accommodation under the motto ?learning in a learning community.? IJburg College is a community school with a diverse intersectoral curriculum for preparatory secondary vocational education and enhanced language, art, culture and sports programmes at the senior general secondary and pre-university education levels, with intensive cooperation with various expertise centres.

? Vulkers Fotografie

The structure comprises three sub-schools in order to preserve the small-scale character, with one school for each two school years. The building is more than a school, however; it also provides the neighbourhood with room for a caf?, theatre, gym, health centre and underground parking.?LIAG took the initiative to propose adding housing to the plans for the sizeable lot, which was initially zoned for the school and gym only, effectively meeting the requirements set out in urban development preconditions for a tall, substantial building on the corner of IJburglaan and Pampuslaan.

? Vulkers Fotografie

The additional housing programme comprising approximately 80 homes (23 above the school and 57 on the square) creates ?residual land value? on a lot that was originally listed as having ?zero.? Working closely with the city, a two-part design was chosen: a small, closed building block for housing only, and a public square on which the school is situated. Consequently, the school regains its autonomy and becomes a recognisable anchor in the surroundings.

plan 01

In the process of working out the details of the facade, a deliberate choice was made to give the complex a single identity. Made of folded metal panels, the unique exterior boldly stands out amongst the brick and smooth faces of the neighbouring buildings.

The folds cause the sun to reflect differently throughout the day, creating a dynamic appearance that is visible even from considerable distances. The project in IJburg is an autonomous, recognisable and compact building on a compact lot. The compact aspect of the building reduces the exterior area, which effectively reduces energy loss.

Tata Motors to Set Up New Courier Company in Mumbai ...

Case Type: new business.
Consulting Firm: Parthenon Group first round job interview.
Industry Coverage: automotive, motor vehicles; freight delivery, shipping services.

Case Interview Question #00518: Your client is Tata Motors Limited (NYSE: TTM), a multinational automotive corporation headquartered in Mumbai, India. Currently Tata Motors is South Asia?s largest automobile company and the eighteenth largest motor vehicle manufacturing company in the world by volume. Part tata motorsof Indian multinational conglomerate the Tata Group, Tata Motors was formerly known as TELCO (TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company). Its products include passenger cars, trucks, vans and coaches.

Recently, your client Tata Motors wants to set up a new courier company that delivers messages, packages, and mail. Couriers are distinguished from ordinary mail services by features such as speed, security, tracking, signature, specialization and individualization of express services, and swift delivery times, which are optional for most everyday mail services. As a premium service, couriers are usually more expensive than usual mail services, and their use is typically restricted to packages where one or more of these features are considered important enough to warrant the cost.

How will you help your client to evaluate if the courier service is the right business for Tata Motors to get into?

Possible Answer:

Candidate: Before I proceed with the analysis, I want to make sure I understand the business model correctly. I think at its simplest, a courier company basically picks up a package from point A and delivers it to point B. The company adds value, differentiates itself and earns money from its supply chain.

Interviewer: This is a simple model, but I think it works well for our purpose.

Candidate: OK. In that case, first, I would like to get some information on the market where the client plans to operate. What is the existing competition? What geography is the company going to serve?

Interviewer: Let?s assume that the client plans to operate in the city of Mumbai. There are, maybe, one or two other companies operating there. Not much competition.

Candidate: OK. In that case I think I want to focus on the profitability of running such a business.

Interviewer: I think it makes sense to proceed this way.

Candidate: I will look at both revenues and costs. We can estimate daily revenues if we know the expected daily business volume and the average price charged per customer. For the latter, I am assuming that the client offers just one type of service (since this is an intracity courier company). Is that a fair assumption?

Interviewer: That?s fine. You can assume the service is priced at Rs. 7.

Candidate: If the company processes 100,000 packages per day, it will earn daily revenue of Rs. 700,000. Now moving to the cost side, I think there are three main cost drivers for the company ? transportation/shipment, advertising and promotion and other general and administrative (G&A) costs.

Interviewer: Good. Why don?t you examine these in detail?

Candidate: I will look at the transportation costs first since I believe these are going to be critical in deciding if the business is profitable. I will assume Mumbai is a linear city, 40 km in length and 10 km wide.

We will have collection centers distributed along the length of the city at equal intervals. Our customers will be able to drop their packages at these centers and collect the receipt. In reality of course, the distribution will not be uniform, since some areas will warrant more stores while it may not be feasible to have centers in some other regions.

Interviewer: That?s a fair assumption. Carry on.

Candidate: Now I need to determine the number of such centers that the company needs. From there, I will determine the number of employees to get a sense of the costs. Let me assume that each service center remains open from 9AM to 4PM. With a one hour lunch break, that gives us six business hours per center. Let?s assume that each customer takes five to ten minutes to process. If each service center is manned by one employee, then it can handle roughly 50 customers per day. Here again, the timings of the service centers could vary across the city, but I am looking at an average shop.

Interviewer: You?re doing fine.

Candidate: So if one service center can handle 50 customers per day, to service 100,000 customers we will need 2,000 centers spread across the city. (Brief pause) That sounds like a large number to me.

Interviewer: No, it will come up to around that. Go on.

Candidate: OK, so we will need 2,000 employees to staff these centers. Then we will also need delivery boys.

Interviewer: Let?s assume that some of these employees can also double up as delivery boys. We can appropriately adjust the timings at some of the stores. Let?s say there are a total of 3,000 operational staff members.

Candidate: I think we will need to pay each employee around Rs. 6,000 per month. That means a daily salary of Rs. 200. So for 3,000 staff members, it comes to around Rs. 600,000 per day.

Interviewer: What are your thoughts at this point?

Candidate: Well, just going by the fact that the transportation costs are coming to around Rs. 600,000 per day when our revenue is Rs. 700,000, I don?t think this business looks very profitable. We haven?t accounted for the advertising costs or even fixed costs yet.

Interviewer: I see. But given that this is a very rough estimate, perhaps we are in a position where the business might be profitable and we can look at areas where we can cut costs or spend efficiently.

Candidate: I think advertising will be very important in this business. I personally think that customers will choose a courier company that they think is reliable and safe. Since this is a new company, and the sector is also underdeveloped in the city, I think they will have to focus on building a brand. Consumers are more likely to consider a brand as reliable if they have heard of it. But perhaps we could structure the employees? salary so that a part of it is a bonus linked to the amount of business they bring in. That way we could save on some of the advertising costs.

Interviewer: I think you have done an excellent job. We?ll end here. Thank you.

Comments: The interviewer was looking for a bottom-up analysis rather than a top-down. In a bottom-up analysis, the interviewer is usually looking to see if the candidate is able to grasp how a business runs at the ground level and what the key drivers will be.

'Survivor' star nominated for Ind. governor's race

(AP) ? Former reality TV star Rupert Boneham said he thinks he has a real shot at becoming Indiana's next governor after being nominated as a third-party choice Saturday.

The fan favorite from 2004's "Survivor: All-Stars" was unopposed for the Libertarian Party's nomination, which came during the party's state convention in Indianapolis.

"My aim, honestly, is to win governor," Boneham said in a phone interview afterward. "I really feel I have a strong chance of pulling not just the Libertarian vote, but the independent vote, the undecided vote, and maybe even some votes from Democrats and Republicans."

He will face Republican Mike Pence and Democrat John Gregg in November's gubernatorial election. Current Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is limited to two terms and cannot run again.

"We have a governor's candidate in Rupert Boneham that can reach out to the 70 percent of the population that does not vote, and bring them into the process," state chairman Sam Goldstein said in a statement. "He brings a level of name ID that our previous candidates have not had, which is important in politics."

The tie-dye wearing Boneham won $1 million on the "Survivor" series and donated some of the prize to his Rupert's Kids charity, which provides mentoring and job training to at-risk youths.

Boneham said he's been a Libertarian for more than 20 years, but didn't become active in the party until this year. He said he wants less government intrusion at the state level, especially in education.

Libertarian 2008 gubernatorial nominee Andy Horning, a former Republican who also has run for Congress and mayor of Indianapolis, was unopposed for the party's U.S. Senate nomination.

"My job is to be in place if people should ever have an epiphany," he said. "The two-party system is just a crazy crony network."

But despite polls showing high levels of voter dissatisfaction and a contested Republican senatorial primary, Horning saw the odds as being against an epiphany this year. "We've all heard this before. Every election, everybody's fed up," he said.

The party also is fielding candidates for five of Indiana's nine congressional seats.

The convention also featured a debate and straw poll among the party's four candidates for president. Former Republican New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson won the straw poll at the convention with 87 percent of the vote.

Intel Core i7-3820

When you?re building your own computer, the first thing to decide is: How much of an enthusiast do you want to be? If you have the desire and the money, you can go for an all-out bleeding-edge system; if not, there are usually more reasonable options. Well, the Intel Core i7-3820 CPU is certainly reasonable by the standards of the company?s Sandy Bridge?Extreme line: Priced at $294 list, it?s noticeably less expensive than either the top-tier Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition ($999 list) or the nipping-at-its-heels Core i7-3930K ($583 list). With the Core i7-3820 you?ll still get a fine chip for your money, but you?ll have to sacrifice the eye-popping performance and features of the pricier chips to get it. If you?re okay with that, you?ll be okay with this CPU.

The Core i7-3820?s differences are apparent just from its specs. In several ways it is much the same as its bigger brothers: It?s based on the same 32nm production process, it has the same 130-watt TDP, and it will require you to also have an X79 Express motherboard (with the LGA2011 socket), a discrete video card (there?s no integrated graphics system on the chip), and a separate CPU cooler (Intel doesn?t bundle one with any CPU in this line). But there the similarities end. The Core i7-3820 has only four processing cores rather than six and thus can handle only eight threads rather than 12. (Though, of course, you?ll most readily notice that deficit if you work regularly with highly threaded applications.) The Core i7-3820 has less cache, too (10MB, versus 12MB for the Core i7-3930K and 15MB for the Core i7-3960X), but it compensates with a clock speed of 3.6GHz that puts it at the front of the Sandy Bridge?Extreme line by that particular metric (the Core i7-3930K?s is 3.2GHz, the Core i7-3960X?s is 3.3GHz). The Core i7-3820?s clocks can rise up to 3.9GHz when Turbo Boost is active; that?s the same rate as the Core i7-3960X (and higher than the Core i7-3930K?s 3.8GHz).

Another variation from the other designs is what hurts the Core i7-3820?s street cred more. Whereas the other two chips have fully unlocked Turbo mode multipliers, this chip?s is only partially unlocked, which means it can be increased by a maximum of four speed bins over the stock clock rate?thus topping out at 4.3GHz. Because Sandy Bridge?Extreme chips provide additional flexibility in terms of adjusting the base clock (with 125MHz, 166MHz, and 250MHz straps), you can push the chip?s overall clock speed further than that. But still, if overclocking is your thing, expect that roadblock to be a bit frustrating.

All this is not to say, however, that you don?t get good performance with the Core i7-3820?you do. For example, when installed in a test system loaded with an Asus P9X79 Deluxe motherboard, it completed our Adobe Photoshop CS5 test in 2 minutes 55 seconds, just 2 seconds behind the Core i7-3930K and 7 seconds behind the Core i7-3960X. But you get (expectedly) bigger gaps elsewhere: In CineBench R11.5, the Core i7-3820 scored 7.07 with multiple cores activated, compared with 10.17 for the Core i7-3930K and 10.48 for the Core i7-3960X. On the Futuremark 3DMark 11 physics test, the Core i7-3820 dropped just below our threshold for smooth pliability, with a score of 8,679 and 27.6 frames per second (or fps) compared with 10,958 and 34.78fps for the Core i7-3930K and 11,509 and 36.54fps for the Core i7-3960X.

There are a couple of additional characteristics worth mentioning about the Core i7-3820?s performance. First, it easily beats out not only other high-end chips from AMD like the FX-8150 and the Phenom II X6 1100T, but in many cases the most powerful model from Intel?s previous generations, the Core i7-990X?a nice accomplishment that shows how quickly ?fast? filters downward. The Core i7-3820?s gains are considerably less significant against the regular Sandy Bridge?based Core i7-2600K, and its follow-up the Core i7-2700K, both of which are only slightly more expensive. But compared with the Core i7-3830K, you won?t see much of a difference in single-threaded applications: Both chips scored the same (1.53) in the CineBench R11.5 single-core test, showing where you can save money if you don?t heavily depend on highly threaded programs.

A nice dip also occurs in power usage: As measured with an Extech Datalogger, the Core i7-3820 pulled 121 watts while idle and 197.3 watts under full load, whereas the Core i7-3930K had a draw of 122.5 watts at idle and 233.7 watts at full load. This may not make a huge difference, but depending on your usage pattern could add up over the life of the chip.

We still think that if you?re going to go all out on a Sandy Bridge?Extreme CPU, the best choice is the Editors? Choice Intel Core i7-3930K: It may cost nearly $600, but it?s a terrific performer that only slightly lags behind the Core i7-3960X. But if you can?t afford that, and if you don?t already have a Core i7-2600K? or Core i7-2700K?based system that will for all intents and purposes be just as good, the Intel Core i7-3820 is still a compelling compromise. You?ll just need to be sure you can live without the bells and whistles the more expensive chips offer.

'We need help': Mexicans count cost of major quake

Henry Romero / Reuters

Farmer Amancio Morales' home in Huixtepec, Mexico, was among dozens damaged by Tuesday's earthquake. The 37-year-old said he expected to be homeless for the foreseeable future.

By msnbc.com news services

HUIXTEPEC, Mexico -- Dozens of families cleared rubble from their destroyed homes in southwestern Mexico on Wednesday following a major 7.4-magnitude earthquake that caused landslides, knocked down school walls and cracked a church tower.

At least 100 houses collapsed and 1,000 were damaged near the epicenter of Tuesday's quake in the municipality of Ometepec in Guerrero state, said Jorge Catalan, an official from the Ministry of Social Development.

No one was killed, but many residents, terrified by repeated aftershocks, spent the night outside and officials said they were preparing shelters and food for those who lost their homes.

Eleven people were injured in the tremor, the strongest to hit the country since the devastating 8.1-magnitude quake of 1985 that killed thousands in Mexico City.

The hardest-hit place in Guerrero was Huixtepec, a village of a few thousand people, said Admiral Sergio Lara, the local navy commander. About 40 percent of its homes were severely damaged, and only about one in five was unscathed, he said.

'I thought the world was going to end'
Standing outside the rubble of his own home and those of his extended family, 37-year-old farmer Amancio Morales said he expected to be homeless for the foreseeable future.

"Here we only make 100 pesos ($7.87) a day. To rebuild everything -- we just don't have enough," he said.

All 50 or so members of his wider family were now sleeping outdoors, he added.

A 7.4-magnitude quake centered near Oaxaca didn't cause heavy damage, but was felt across a huge area of the country. Telemundo's Julio Vaqueiro reports.

Large boulders from landslides blocked the road to the nearby small town of Paso Cuaulote, where nearly all 150 villagers, who grow beans and corn, were hit.

"I thought the world was going to end," said farmer Vicente Santiago, 30, surveying a crumbled wall in his father's cinder block home. His father, taking a nap when the quake hit, escaped unharmed even after the roof caved in.

Maria Lopez, 33, fled her home with her 2-week-old baby boy and spent the night by the river with the rest of the town.

"Rocks were falling from the mountainside onto the house," said Lopez, as she clutched her baby outside her seriously cracked mud-brick home.

Rubble-strewn classrooms
Students picked their way through rubble-strewn classrooms on Wednesday at one of the three primary schools damaged in the municipality. "The children were shouting. We had to evacuate," said teacher Abel Hernandez.

A major earthquake measuring as high as 7.6 magnitude, struck east of Acapulco. Msnbc's Tamron Hall reports.

In the nearby town of Igualapa, one of the towers on the colonial-era church crumbled, although locals were still holding a service inside.

In Mexico City, residents were largely spared, with only small cracks in buildings and minor damage to one subway line and a bridge. Mexico City is about 200 miles north-northeast of the epicenter.

The capital's repair bill for the quake, which was felt as far away as Guatemala should come in under $2 million, Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said.

Henry Romero / Reuters

A father carries his son next to the family's house, which was damaged by Tuesday's earthquake, in Paso Cuaulote, Mexico.

The type of the earthquake -- it shook the city from side to side rather than up and down -- and better construction regulations since 1985 saved the city from more serious damage, Ebrard told national television.

That was scant consolation to villagers in hilly parts of Guerrero left without a roof above their heads.

'It was so cold'
Among the locals forced to sleep outdoors by the quake in Huixtepec was a woman of about 90, Angela Hernandez.

"It was so cold last night," she said. "We need help -- wood or cement or anything."

There have been 15 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or stronger since 1973 within 310 miles of Tuesday's quake.

Mexico City, built on a lake bed, was badly damaged in 1985 when an 8.1 earthquake killed at least 10,000 people. In past years, Guerrero has suffered several severe earthquakes, including a 7.9 in 1957 which killed an estimated 68 people, and a 7.4 in 1995 which left three dead.

A magnitude-8.0 quake near Manzanillo on Mexico's central Pacific coast killed 51 people in 1995 and a magintude-7.5 quake killed at least 20 people in the southern state of Oaxaca in 1999.

Video: Trayvon Martin?s final moments

>>> in florida tonight, demands for the arrest of a neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed an unarmed teenager last month, they are demands that are growing in the wake of revelations from a victim's girlfriend that she was on the phone with him as the incident happened. and the involvement of the justice department , the other new development in this case. nbc's ron allen with us tonight from sanford, florida . ron, good evening.

>> reporter: good evening, brian. hundreds people are here inside and outside this church to confront local authorities and demand an arrest for the killing of trayvon martin. in washington today, the justice department said it would investigate the case. here in florida , the states attorney said he would lay the case out before a grand jury and let them decide what to do next. the martin family laid out more proof that he was an innocent victim . they played recordings of a phone conversation between he and his girlfriend. she heard what happened.

>> she hears another voice say, what are you doing around here?

>> reporter: then she said she heard what sounded like an altercation. the defense says george zimmerman shot and killed trayvon martin in self-defense. a shooting with no racial overtones or hate crimes. but when zimmerman was calling police the night trayvon was killed he used a racial epithet .

>> what entrance is he heading toward?

>> the back entrance. [ bleep ].

>> reporter: all of this is igniting more demands for an arrest. the victim's parents say their online petition has more than half a million signatures. for many here, the martin case is not an isolated incident. just last year, when a police officer 's sun assaulted a black man outside a bar, it took a month -- and 24 this video appearing on youtube before charges were filed. in 2005 , murder charges against two white security guards were dismissed after a black teen was shot dead.

>> this is where it happened?

>> yes, just about right here.

>> reporter: if this quiet and comfortable community where there had been a rash of burglaries, residents are still outraged by what they heard in zimmerman 's neighborhood watch call to police.

>> are you following him?

>> yeah.

>> okay, we don't need you to do that.

>> he's not charles bronson , and this wasn't "death wish." this isn't a movie, it's an actual thing that's happened out here. i really hope the fbi can get to the bottom of it.

>> reporter: but pastor valley houston, a mother, says black parents have been warning their young sons to be careful for years. she's hopeful the martin family now gets some measure of justice.

>> we don't feel like justice has been done. we want an arrest. we want all the questions answered as much as possible.

>> reporter: this is just one of several protests and town halls planned for this week. a lot of people are saying that hearing those 911 calls, hearing the police tell zimmerman to back off, hearing martin's cries for help have turned up the intensity here. and again, zimmerman was nowhere to be found.

>> ron allen , thanks.

>>> a program note , trayvon martin's parents will be here in our new york studios tomorrow morning on "today" for an exclusive interview.
