FULLERTON, CA - Steven McClellan, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound center from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, has signed a grant-in-aid agreement to continue his academic and athletic career at Cal State Fullerton it was announced on Friday.
"We believe Steven will add some much needed size and strength to our frontline," Titans' Interim Head Coach Andy Newman said. "He is a tough, hard-nosed player who will add a great deal of physicality to our program."
McClellan becomes the fourth transfer to the Titans' program this off-season, joining Michael Williams (University of San Francisco), Givon Crump (Pasadena City College), and Chris Carvin (American River Community College). Due to NCAA transfer rules, McClellan must sit out the 2012-13 season and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
A native of Fresno, Calif., who prepped at Edison HS, McClellan averaged 6.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in two seasons with the Warhawks of the Sun Belt Conference while shooting just over 48 percent from the field. He posted his best season as a sophomore in 2011-12, averaging 7.9 ppg and 6.2 rpg while hitting on 46 percent from the field and blocking 14 shots.
Last season, McClellan reached double figures seven times in 22 appearances and led the team in rebounding 11 times, scoring a career-high 16 points at UNLV and setting a career high with 13 boards in 20 minutes against North Texas.
As a freshman, he averaged 5.1 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting just under 51 percent from the floor.

All these efforts seem to be paying off. I?m a frequent Amazon shopper, and over the last few months I?ve noticed a significant improvement in its shipping times. As a subscriber to Amazon?s Prime subscription service, I?m used to getting two-day shipping on most items for free. But on about a third of my purchases, my package arrives after just one day for no extra charge. Sometimes the service is so speedy it seems almost magical. One Friday afternoon last month, I ordered three smoke alarms, and I debated paying extra for shipping so that I could install them over the weekend. The $9 per item that Amazon charges for Saturday delivery seemed too steep, though, so I went with standard two-day service. The next morning, the delivery guy arrived with my smoke detectors. I?d gotten next-day Saturday service for free. I have no idea how Amazon made any money on my order (the whole bill was less than $30) but several people on Twitter told me that they?ve experienced similarly delightful service.
(Updated 3:01 p.m. Eastern) WASHINGTON --?The Federal Reserve is leaning toward taking further action to support the struggling U.S. economy. But minutes of the Fed's June meeting show policymakers are at odds over whether the economy needs more help now.
A few said the economy may already require additional support. But several others noted that further action "could be warranted" if the recovery lost momentum, if risks became more pronounced or inflation seemed likely to run below the committee's target.
Investors appeared to be disappointed by the division within the Fed.
Stock prices sank after the Fed expressed concerns about the economy. The Dow Jones industrial average had been down nearly 40 points before the minutes were released at 2 p.m. Eastern time. At around 2:30 p.m., the Dow was down 112 points, on track for its fifth straight day of losses.
Fed officials signaled at the June 19-20 meeting their concern that the struggling U.S. economy could worsen if Congress fails to avert tax hikes and across-the-board spending cuts that kick in at the end of the year. And they expressed worries that Europe's debt crisis will weigh on U.S. growth.
Members said the economy will likely continue to grow moderately. But the Fed lowered its growth forecast at the June meeting, noting that the U.S. job market had weakened and consumer spending slowed. It also said it didn't expect the unemployment rate to fall much further this year from its current 8.2 percent.
Since the Fed met last month, the job market's weakness has persisted. The government said Friday that hiring in June was weak for a third straight month. The economy added just 80,000 jobs last month.
Some members noted that defense contractors are already laying plans for layoffs if lawmakers don't address the package of tax hikes and spending cuts by the end of the year. Members warned that tighter government spending could slow the economy well into next year.
Related: Do you make $30,000 a year or less? We want to hear from you.
At the meeting, the Fed extended a program that shifts its bond portfolio to try to lower long-term interest rates. Policymakers left open the possibility of providing further help, such as launching a new program of bond purchases.
Chairman Ben Bernanke may offer further guidance on the Fed's plans next week when he delivers the central bank's updated economic assessment to Congress. After the June meeting, Bernanke told reporters he was open to another round of bond purchases if the job market didn't improve.
Employers added an average of just 75,000 jobs a month in the April-June quarter ? only about a third of the 225,000 jobs a month created in the first three months of the year.
Many economists predict the Fed will hold off for one more meeting and give the job market a little longer to show improvement. If it doesn't show gains, the Fed could announce some new action at its Sept. 12-13 meeting.
Since the recession, the Fed has bought more than $2 trillion in Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities, expanding its portfolio to more than $2.8 trillion.
After its last meeting, the Fed downgraded its economic outlook. It now expects growth of just 1.9 percent to 2.4 percent in 2012, half a percentage point lower than its April forecast.?

One of the most common concerns regarding kitchen remodeling is the layout. The layout of your kitchen will determine how your kitchen is used as well as the positioning of your kitchen fixtures. The layout will also have a strong impact on your kitchen's atmosphere and will have a hand in determining the theme and d?cor of your kitchen.
When looking for Fairfield kitchen remodeling services, it would be in your best interests to look through a company's portfolios and see the work they have done. Any Fairfield kitchen remodeling company worth their salt will definitely have worked on various kinds of kitchen layouts and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each layout as well as determine which one would be ideal for your lifestyle.
To help with your decision, here are a few layouts you may want to ask your Fairfield kitchen remodeling expert about. These layouts have been in use for many years and are known to be functional and practical.
* L-Shape This kitchen layout is quite common and is one of the more popular options to date. This layout works well for large households, as it is not prone to crowding issues. Ideally, these layouts have kitchen islands, enhancing its fluid workflow.
* Corridor This is a very common layout found in a lot of kitchens. Most people have lived in dormitories with their kitchen designed in this fashion. This is ideal for narrowly spaced kitchens and it makes use of the tried and true kitchen triangle.
* Single Wall A basic layout that is commonly used for smaller kitchens, this layout places all the essential kitchen appliances on a single side. The best part about this layout is that it is much cheaper to install while still offering numerous design options for your Fairfield kitchen remodeling.
* U shape This kitchen layout is very similar to the single wall style but the range or cooktop is located at center of the end of the layout. This has more counter space and also utilizes the efficient kitchen triangle. This layout is commonly found within lofts or small apartments.
These are but a few examples of kitchen layouts that you can utilize. A good Fairfield kitchen remodeling expert would be able to suggest the ideal layout for your kitchen after taking a look at your home and discussing your needs and habits. An investment like this can often last for a lifetime.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? A snake that scientists had declared extinct long ago has been found living in a nature reserve on a tiny isle just off the east Caribbean island of St. Lucia, conservationists said Tuesday.
At least 11 St. Lucia Racer snakes were spotted and tagged by a group of international scientists hunting for the snake in the Maria Islands reserve, which is part of St. Lucia and located about one kilometer (0.6 miles) south of the main island, according to the British-based Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.
Overall, scientists estimate that 18 snakes live on the reserve, said Matthew Morton, Durrell's Eastern Caribbean program manager.
"In one sense it is a very worrying situation, with such a small population restricted to a single, tiny site," he said. "But in another sense, it's an opportunity ... It means that we still have a chance to save this species."
The non-venomous brown snake was declared extinct in 1936, but somebody later spotted one on the rocky reserve in 1973 and rare sightings have since been reported. Late last year, Durrell, with help from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other groups, launched a search for the snake on the larger of the two Maria Islands.
A team of six scientists and several volunteers spent five months scouring the rocky outcrop where they found some snakes slithering around during the day, looking for lizards and frogs to eat. Once they captured the snakes, they implanted microchips that will transmit data for at least 10 years, including information about their lifespan and other unknown details, Morton said.
Scientists also collected DNA samples, but the results on whether the snakes are genetically diverse won't be known for several months. Diversity is important because it would allow for a more successful breeding program, scientists say.
There's currently a lot of in-breeding on the 12-hectare (30-acre) islet where the snakes live, but scientists did not spot many deformities, which is encouraging, Morton said.
Brian Crother, a U.S.-based expert on Caribbean snakes who was not involved in the project, said he was excited about the finding.
"It provides us with another opportunity to preserve a piece of biodiversity that we thought we had lost forever," he said.
As a result of the scientists' findings, Durrell called the St. Lucia racer the world's rarest snake, but Crother and other scientists disputed the claim.
"I think saying 'rarest' is a good way to bring attention to a desperate situation, but whether it really is the rarest, I don't think you can say for sure," said Crother, interim biology department director at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Scientists are now trying to figure out the best way to save the snake, which is less than three feet (one meter) long and is known for being gentle and comfortable with human beings.
Morton said moving some snakes to St. Lucia's main island isn't an option because the mongoose, its biggest predator, lives there and will destroy the population. He said breeding the reptiles on other offshore islands is a possibility, but scientists have to determine whether there's an adequate food supply.
Frank Burbrink, a biology professor at the College of Staten Island who was not involved in the project, said the snakes should be bred in another place to ensure their future.
"You don't want to put your eggs in one very, very, very small basket," he said.
Morton said the trick is to ensure that people are aware of the snake's plight so they can help with their conservation.
But he acknowledged that could be difficult, noting: "These aren't whales or fluffy little animals that people like."
We've come to depend on Wi-Fi as a way to work and play on our phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, home video game consoles, and a myriad other products. As such, it's important to have a strong, dependable signal to transfer data. NetSpot, a free Mac utility from Etwok, lets you scan your immediate area for Wi-Fi signals and view related information such as open and closed signals, dead zones, and more. More importantly, NetSpot has a drawing tool that lets you map a Wi-Fi-friendly floor plan in your home or office, so that you can arrange your router and electronics in such as fashion that you'll receive strong throughput.
The NetSpot Experience NetSpot is used in one of two ways: as a simple Wi-Fi detector (with color-coded readouts in the left column) or as an advanced tool for arranging your router and hardware to create the strongest network possible. When I fired up NetSpot, it quickly picked up dozens of signals (both in the PCMag.com lab and beyond), and identified the strength of each, whether or not they were open or password-protected, SSID, and more.
If you want to see where the signals are the strongest and weakest within your immediate vicinity, NetSpot can help with that, too. When you click a spot on the screen (which can either be a blank or populated with a generic floor plan), NetSpot scans the area for available wireless networks. NetSpot then prompts you to walk around the area while carrying your laptop so that you can see the various strengths in different areas of the room. As such, this mapping feature isn't very useful to desktop computer users.
That said, I like that you can even add measurement information so that you can draw floor plans to scale?very cool. Once you identify the dead points in your home or office (and their sizes) you can remedy the problem by physically relocating your router or purchasing a repeater to give your wireless signal a boost.
Net-worthy NetSpot is a powerful free app that serves up a surprising amount of relevant Wi-Fi data, and a no-brainer Editors' Choice winner. Desktop users may not take advantage of the mapping feature due to their computers' relative immobility, but laptop users who have even the faintest interest in the surrounding wireless networks should download this app.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli court cleared former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Tuesday of the central charges in a multi-case corruption trial that forced him from power, but convicted him of a lesser charge of breach of trust.
The verdict was seen as a major victory for Olmert, who stepped down as prime minister for the centrist Kadima party in 2009 to battle allegations that included accepting cash-stuffed envelopes from a supporter and pocketing the proceeds from a double-billing scam on overseas travel.
His conviction on the lesser charge of "breach of trust" made him the first Israeli prime minister ever convicted of a crime, and his legal troubles are far from over.
He will be sentenced on Sept. 6 and is currently standing trial in a separate real estate bribery case. For now at least, a return to politics for the 66-year-old Olmert appears unlikely.
Olmert, 66, appeared calm and relieved as the verdict was delivered in the Jerusalem court. As he left the courtroom, the former prime minister had a wide smile on his face and kissed defense lawyers and advisers.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Olmert proudly declared his innocence.
"There was no corruption. There was no taking of money. There was no use of money. There were no cash envelopes," Olmert said. He said the lone conviction was merely a "procedural lapse" from which he would draw the necessary lessons.
The verdict, which capped a two-year trial, covered three separate allegations: illegally accepting funds from an American supporter, double-billing Jewish groups for trips abroad and channeling state grants to companies linked to a close friend. He was acquitted in the first two cases and found guilty in the last.
The first case was the most dramatic, with Jewish American businessman Morris Talansky flown in to testify that he handed the former Israeli leader envelopes stuffed with hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, painting him as a high-living traveler fond of fancy hotels and first-class travel.
The second case of double-billing assured his resignation, with Olmert unable to withstand public pressure to step down as the corruption charges multiplied.
The court on Tuesday convicted a close Olmert aide, Shula Zaken, of fraud and breach of trust in that case, but said there was "reasonable doubt" that the prime minister knew what had happened. It noted that Zaken refused to testify in the case, making it difficult to convict Olmert.
In the last case, the court convicted Olmert of breach of trust for steering job appointments and contracts to clients of a close associate when he served as minister of industry and trade. The court called it a "harsh conflict of interest that amounted to a breach of trust because there was a conflict between his personal commitment to this man and his public responsibilities."
Olmert's lawyer, Eli Zohar, said he would not appeal this conviction.
The charges were filed after Olmert became prime minister in 2006, but stemmed from his time as mayor of Jerusalem and later as a Cabinet minister.
After he was indicted in 2008, he announced his resignation, remaining as prime minister until February 2009 elections that brought the current prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, into office.
The proceedings involved 152 court sessions over two years, producing 4,000 pages of testimony. The case first broke more than four years ago.
Olmert still faces many more months in court. He is currently on trial in a bribery scandal surrounding a controversial Jerusalem real estate project. Any thought of a political comeback would likely have to wait until that case is resolved.
Moshe Negbi, Israel Radio's legal analyst, said the Sept. 6 sentencing will decide Olmert's political future. If the court says the conviction amounts to "moral turpitude," he would be sentenced to at least three months of prison time or community service and be barred from re-entering politics for seven years.
Olmert's lawyer, Zohar, said there was no legal precedent for jail time on a single count of breach of trust.
Olmert entered politics as a young parliamentarian in 1973 with the hardline Likud Party. But late in his career, he underwent a transformation, adopting dovish views in favor of broad concessions to the Palestinians.
He bolted the Likud with then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to form the centrist Kadima Party in 2005, leading it to victory in elections the following year after Sharon suffered a debilitating stroke. As prime minister, Olmert conducted intense peace talks with the Palestinians, offering a near-complete pullout from the West Bank before the talks fizzled at the end of his term. The pileup of corruption charges hurt Olmert's chances of reaching a peace deal with the Palestinians.
Negotiations have been largely frozen since Olmert left office.
Besides the inconclusive peace efforts with the Palestinians, his term was marked by a war with Lebanon's Hezbollah in 2006 and a bruising offensive in Gaza in early 2009 that largely halted years of Palestinian rocket fire.
Olmert started his political career nearly four decades ago as an anti-corruption crusader, but allegations soon came to dog him. In 1988, he was acquitted in another corruption trial related to his activities in the Likud Party.
Israel's leadership has been tarnished multiple times by convictions in recent years, and members of Olmert's own Cabinet are currently sitting in jail. His former finance minister was sentenced to five years for embezzlement, and another member of his Cabinet was sentenced to four years for taking bribes. Neither case occurred while the two were in the Cabinet.
In an unrelated case, last year, former Israeli President Moshe Katsav was sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of rape and other sex crimes prior to his presidency.
SINGAPORE (AP) ? Asian stocks were lower Monday after a disappointing U.S. jobs report stoked concern that the world's biggest economy remains mired in weak growth.
The U.S. economy added a less than expected 80,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said Friday. The tepid employment growth, which followed the first drop in U.S. manufacturing in three years, increases pressure on the Federal Reserve to implement monetary stimulus measures known as quantitative easing.
The release later this week of the minutes of the last Fed meeting might show whether the Fed is leaning toward more stimulus to boost growth.
"The obvious concern is that this is the start of a slowdown that will lead to another recession," Capital Economics said in a report. "Although it is very clear that the U.S. economy has lost a lot of momentum, there are no real indications that it will soon come to a complete standstill or even go into reverse."
Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.8 percent to 8,953.11 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 1.5 percent to 19,495.88.
South Korea's Kospi slipped 1.3 percent to 1,834.08. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.7 percent to 4,130.70 and China's Shanghai Composite shed 1.1 percent to 2,199.16.
Inflation figures for China released Monday showed the consumer price index at its lowest since January 2010. That will give Beijing leeway to continue adding stimulus to fight an economic slowdown. China is scheduled to release its latest trade numbers Tuesday and retail sales, industrial production and gross domestic product on Friday. In a surprise move, China last week cut interest rates for a second time in a month.
"All these easing measures should filter through to generate a modest growth recovery," said HSBC economist Qu Hongbin.
On Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 1 percent at 12,772.47. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.9 percent to 1,354.68. The Nasdaq composite was down 1.3 at 2,937.33.

Killing of Bin Laden offers insight into the 'business of martyrdom'Public release date: 9-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The way the U.S. military killed Osama bin Laden sent a message every bit as powerful as the fact that he was killed in the first place, according to the author of a new history of suicide bombing.
The fact that bin Laden was killed by a team of highly trained soldiers - and not by a drone or bomb - spoiled the grand narrative of brave Muslim fighters vs. U.S. technology that bin Laden and al Qaeda had developed in their war against the United States.
"Bin Laden had built up this image of himself and al Qaeda as a morally superior David against the technological Goliath that is the United States," said Jeffrey Lewis, a lecturer in the International Studies program at Ohio State University.
"But bin Laden was killed by people who risked their lives to get to him. The United States could have flattened the compound with a bomb, but we took a risk in order to apprehend or kill him. And we made sure that we got the man responsible for the 9/11 attacks, without a lot of other casualties. It sent a message to the Muslim world that we were after justice and not revenge."
Lewis is author of the new book The Business of Martyrdom: A History of Suicide Bombing (Naval Institute Press, 2012).
In the book, Lewis discusses how suicide bombers were essential to bin Laden's narrative, because they were supposed to show how al Qaeda relied on people of faith over technology to gain victory over their enemies.
But bin Laden was wrong in his belief that al Qaeda didn't rely on technology, according to Lewis. The key to understanding suicide bombing - and to preventing it - is to realize that suicide bombers are essentially a form of technology themselves.
In fact, Lewis came to the subject of suicide bombing through his background studying the history and philosophy of technology, particularly biotechnology.
"When people used the term "smart bomb" as a metaphor for suicide bombing, it always seemed to me that it was more than just a metaphor," he said.
"When you view suicide bombing as technology, you understand its complexity. It requires you to see that there are users in the system - people who are using the technology. And then you understand that the bombers themselves are not lone psychopaths, as we often view them. Instead, they are people being used by other people to reach specific goals - just like we use smart bombs or other types of technology to reach our goals."
Terrorist organizations try to gain the capability to produce suicide bombers in the same predictable ways that the United States and other countries produce smart bombs.
"They are taking martyrdom, which is a rare and noble human action, and trying to regularize it. They are mechanizing martyrdom," he said.
Lewis said that any kind of technology can only be understood as part of a larger system that includes the users of the technology and the larger society in which they operate.
In this case, suicide bombers are the technology, and terrorist organizations like al Qaeda are the users.
Organizations that use suicide bombers have to convince people, usually young males, to become bombers, but also have to convince the wider society that their use of suicide bombers is legitimate.
Lewis said that while suicide bombing may often be successful in its tactical goals of killing the enemy, it is actually very difficult to convince their own societies that it is worth it.
"Suicide bombing only works if there is a tacit agreement between the organization promoting it and the society at large that this use of people is in fact authentic. For martyrdom to be authentic it has to look like the free choice of the individual. Authenticity is central to martyrdom. If it looks like a group is tricking young people, or intimidating them into become suicide bombers, society will not accept it.
"That's the whole trick of managing suicide bombing: you are using people and you are trying to convince people that you are not using them," he said.
The fact that suicide bombing relies on a web of relationships between users, society and the bombers themselves means that there are actually many ways to stop suicide attacks, Lewis said.
"For suicide bombing, like all forms of technology, there are more ways for it to fail than for it to succeed," he said.
One way is to simply block use of the technology - the suicide bombers, in this case. This is what the Israelis have done in building physical barriers between their territories and those held by Palestinians.
Another way is to destroy the organizations that sponsor suicide bombing. Sri Lanka was rocked by attacks from a group called the LTTE from the 1970s through 2009, when the group was defeated by the Sri Lankan government and the leadership died or was killed. No suicide bombings have occurred since.
Finally, opponents can help defeat societal support for suicide bombing. "Suicide bombing organizations have to build a believable narrative to have success and the support of their society, and you can attack that narrative," Lewis said.
For example, Lewis said the U.S. invasion of Iraq inadvertently drove moderate Iraqis into the hands of extremists, building support for the use of suicide bombing there. However, once the U.S. began working closely with various Iraqi groups, support for suicide bombing faded.
Lewis said it is hard to predict what will happen to rates of suicide bombing in the world. The number of suicide attacks rose from 102 in 2004 up to a high of 520 in 2007. Globally, the number of suicide bombings declined for three straight years from 2008 through 2010 (to 262) before increasing slightly in 2011.
One reason that suicide bombing will continue is that terrorist leaders don't often consider whether these attacks actually help them achieve their political goals, Lewis said.
"They let the tactical success of individual attacks blind them to the fact that they aren't achieving their strategic, political goals. They become short sighted.
"I don't see suicide bombing going away. Just because it is not doing what people want it to do, there are some groups that are going to keep trying."

On Sunday and Monday, thousands of religious activists took to the streets in Pakistan to protest the country's re-opening of overland supply routes for NATO troops in Afghanistan.
"We want to stop the NATO supplies lines at any cost, because this is right now directly an attack on the sovereignty of Pakistan and nothing can be compromised on the sovereignty of Pakistan," said Abdullah Gul, a member of the Defense Council of Pakistan, to Voice of America.
Many of the hardline religious activists who rallied on Sunday and Monday were linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group, which is considered a terrorist organization by the United States.
The protest began in Lahore on Sunday, reaching the capital city of Islamabad on Monday. Members of the convoy, which is estimated to consist of about 200 vehicles and 8,000 people according to the Associated Press, announced an intention to block NATO troops from passing through their territory.
Until recently, Pakistan refused to allow NATO to transport supplies via its overland routes into landlocked Afghanistan.?The routes were shut down last November after U.S. airstrikes inadvertently killed 24 Pakistani troops, an incident that greatly damaged the two countries' already fragile alliance. NATO has meanwhile used more expensive and time-consuming means of getting supplies into Afghanistan, including long overland routes that run from the Black Sea through Siberia and Central Asia.
A formal announcement of the reopening was made on July 3, after the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Pakistan to express deep regrets over the November incident.?The agreement will bring an increase of aid funding from the United States, which will benefit Pakistan's struggling economy. The open land routes will also help facilitate NATO's planned withdrawal from Afghanistan by 2014.
Denise Rich, the wealthy socialite and former wife of pardoned billionaire trader Marc Rich, has given up her U.S. citizenship - and, with it, much of her U.S. tax bill.
Rich, 68, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and glossy figure in Democratic and European royalty circles, renounced her American passport in November, according to her lawyer.
Her maiden name, Denise Eisenberg, appeared in the Federal Register on April 30 in a quarterly list of Americans who renounced their U.S. citizenship and permanent residents who handed in their green cards.
By dumping her U.S. passport, Rich likely will save tens of millions of dollars or more in U.S. taxes over the long haul, tax lawyers say.
Rich, who wrote songs recorded by Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige and Jessica Simpson, is the latest bold-faced name to join a wave of wealthy people renouncing their American citizenship. Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin gave up his U.S. passport to become a citizen of Singapore, an offshore tax haven, before the company's initial public offering in May.
Nearly 1,800 citizens and permanent residents, a record since data was first compiled in 1998, expatriated last year, according to government figures.
Rich, who was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, has Austrian citizenship through her deceased father, said Michael Heidt, a lawyer in Hollywood, Florida, who represented her in a recent lawsuit.
He said Rich had dumped her U.S. passport "so that she can be closer to her family and to Peter Cervinka, her long-time partner." Rich's two daughters live in London; Cervinka, a wealthy property developer, is an Austrian national. Rich plans to make London her main residence and does not intend to acquire other passports, Heidt said.
Marc Rich's pardon
Rich's ex-husband, commodities trader Marc Rich, fled the United States in 1983 when indicted on charges of tax evasion, fraud, racketeering and illegal trading of oil with Iran. They divorced in 1996.
Marc Rich received a presidential pardon in 2001 on President Bill Clinton's last day in office. Federal prosecutors and Congress investigated the pardon, and in 2002 a House of Representatives committee concluded Denise Rich had swayed the action through donations to the Clinton library and campaign.
Dubbed "Lady Gatsby" by Yachting magazine, Rich owns multiple properties, including a mansion in Aspen, Colorado. She is a frequent habitue of Cannes, Monte Carlo and St. Tropez with celebrities and singers aboard her 157-foot yacht, Lady Joy.
Rich will escape future U.S. taxes but possibly not all current ones. In 2008, Congress imposed an expatriation tax on persons with a net worth of more than $2 million who dump their U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Under the law, those people owe an "exit tax" on their worldwide property, computed at a fair market value the day before they leave. But tax lawyers say the tax can be reduced or avoided by structuring asset holdings through foreign annuities.
While Austria, like the United States, generally taxes its citizens on their worldwide income, it has generous tax breaks for citizens who spend half the year abroad.
In January, Rich put her 5th Avenue penthouse in New York on the market for $65 million, according to the listing agent, The Corcoran Group. New York property records show Rich acquired a 100 percent stake in the apartment, described by Corcoran as "the epitome of luxury and grandeur," for $200,000 in 2006. Bonnie Evans, the Corcoran broker for the property, declined to discuss details.
Cook Islands
The recent lawsuit against Rich was filed on behalf of Lee Goldberg, the former protector of a Cook Islands trust of which Rich is a beneficiary, in February. The case was dismissed in April, court records show.
The Cook Islands, a South Pacific tax haven, offers Swiss-style secrecy for wealthy investors.
The lawsuit accused Rich and Richard Kilstock, a British real estate entrepreneur who is married to Rich's daughter Daniella, of "transferring, moving or secreting trust assets, in violation of the trust's guidelines and without the knowledge or permission of Goldberg."
Rich and Kilstock denied the charges and accused Goldberg of altering trust documents, court filings show.
Both Goldberg and his attorney, Donald Thomas, declined to discuss the case. Rich recently dismissed Goldberg, one of her long-time lawyers, as protector of the trust.
Heidt, who also represents Kilstock in the case, declined to discuss the lawsuit. Kilstock did not return calls requesting comment.
