Egypt's president says economy grew 2.6 pct in July-Sept

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI is still searching for one of two convicted bank robbers who escaped last week from a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago by lowering themselves on a makeshift rope nearly 20 stories to the street. Kenneth Conley, 38, and his cellmate, Joseph Jose Banks, 37, escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center early on the morning of December 18. The pair apparently broke a window in the cell they shared, squeezed through the opening and lowered themselves to the street. They then hailed a cab to make their getaway. ...

Study examines overuse of ambulatory health care services in ...

? Public Health ? Dec 25, 2012

An analysis of nationally representative survey data found significant improvement in the delivery of underused care, but more limited changes in the reduction of inappropriate care in ambulatory health care settings between 1998 and 2009, according to a report published Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

?Given the rising costs of health care, policymakers are increasingly interested in identifying the inefficiencies in our health care system,? the authors write as background. ?The objective of this study was to determine whether the overuse and misuse of health care services in the ambulatory setting has decreased in the past decade.?

Minal S. Kale, M.D., with Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, New York, and colleagues conducted an analysis using data from the 1998, 1999, 2008 and 2009 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) and the outpatient department component of the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS), both of which are nationally representative surveys conducted annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s National Center for Health Statistics.

The study sample included 79,083 and 102,980 unweighted visits by adult patients at least 18 years of age in 1998 to 1999, and 2008 to 2009, respectively. Compared with visits made in 1998-1999, visits in 2008-2009 were by slightly older patients (average age 54.2 years vs. 50.9 years), and more patients were insured by Medicare.?

The authors found a statistically significant improvement in six of nine underuse quality indicators, including improvement in use of antithrombotic therapy for atrial fibrillation; use of aspirin, ?-blockers, and Statins in coronary artery disease; use of ?-blockers in congestive heart failure; and the use of Statins in diabetes mellitus.

The authors also observed improvement in two of 11 overuse quality indicators, which included a statistically significant decrease in cervical cancer screening among women older than 65 years, as well as a reduction in the overuse of antibiotics for asthma exacerbations. However, there was an increase in one overuse indicator, prostate cancer screening in men older than 74 years. The authors observed no changes in the other eight quality indicators during the study period.

?In our examination of ambulatory care in the United States, we found an improvement in most of the underuse measures but limited changes in the delivery of inappropriate care,? the authors conclude. ?Developing clinical practice guidelines that define when care should not be delivered and performance measures to address inappropriate care are critical steps to advance the mission of increasing the value and efficiency of health care delivery.?

A lump of coal for 'Fiscal Cliff-mas'

3 hrs.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street traders are going to have to pack their tablets and work computers in their holiday luggage after all.

A traditionally quiet week could become hellish for traders as politicians in Washington are likely to fall short of an agreement to deal with $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts due to kick in early next year. Many economists forecast that this "fiscal cliff" will push the economy into recession.

Thursday's debacle in the U.S. House of Representatives, where Speaker John Boehner failed to secure passage of his own bill that was meant to pressure President Obama and Senate Democrats, only added to worry that the protracted budget talks will stretch into 2013.

Still, the market remains resilient. Friday's decline on Wall Street, triggered by Boehner's fiasco, was not enough to prevent the S&P 500 from posting its best week in four.

"The markets have been sort of taking this in stride," said Sandy Lincoln, chief market strategist at BMO Asset Management U.S. in Chicago, which has about $38 billion in assets under management.

"The markets still basically believe that something will be done," he said.

If something happens next week, it will come in a short time frame. Markets will be open for a half-day on Christmas Eve, when Congress will not be in session, and will close on Tuesday for Christmas. Wall Street will resume regular stock trading on Wednesday, but volume is expected to be light throughout the rest of the week with scores of market participants away on a holiday break.

For the week, the three major U.S. stock indexes posted gains, with the Dow Jones industrial average up 0.4 percent, the S&P 500 up 1.2 percent and the Nasdaq Composite Index up 1.7 percent.

Stocks also have booked solid gains for the year so far, with just five trading sessions left in 2012: The Dow has advanced 8 percent, while the S&P 500 has climbed 13.7 percent and the Nasdaq has jumped 16 percent.

Equity volumes are expected to fall sharply next week. Last year, daily volume on each of the last five trading days dropped on average by about 49 percent, compared with the rest of 2011 - to just over 4 billion shares a day exchanging hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT in the final five sessions of the year,?from a 2011 daily average of 7.9 billion.

If the trend repeats, low volumes could generate a spike in volatility as traders keep track of any advance in the cliff talks in Washington.

"I'm guessing it's going to be a low volume week. There's not a whole lot other than the fiscal cliff that is going to continue to take the headlines," said Joe Bell, senior equity analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research, in Cincinnati.

"A lot of people already have a foot out the door, and with the possibility of some market-moving news, you get the possibility of increased volatility."

Economic data would have to be way off the mark to move markets next week. But if the recent trend of better-than-expected economic data holds, stocks will have strong fundamental support that could prevent selling from getting overextended even as the fiscal cliff negotiations grind along.

Small and mid-cap stocks have outperformed their larger peers in the last couple of months, indicating a shift in investor sentiment toward the U.S. economy. The S&P MidCap 400 Index overcame a technical level by confirming its close above 1,000 for a second week.

"We view the outperformance of the mid-caps and the break of that level as a strong sign for the overall market," Schaeffer's Bell said.

"Whenever you have flight to risk, it shows investors are beginning to have more of a risk appetite."

Evidence of that shift could be a spike in shares in the defense sector, expected to take a hit as defense spending is a key component of the budget talks.

The PHLX defense sector index hit a historic high on Thursday, and far outperformed the market on Friday with a dip of just 0.26 percent, while the three major U.S. stock indexes finished the day down about 1 percent.

Following a half-day on Wall Street on Monday ahead of the Christmas holiday, Wednesday will bring the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index. It is expected to show a ninth?straight month of gains.

U.S. jobless claims on Thursday are seen roughly in line with the previous week's level, with the forecast at 360,000 new filings for unemployment insurance, compared with the previous week's 361,000.

Hang Your Shower Curtain's Bottom Corner to Improve Drainage and Avoid Mold Growth

Hang Your Shower Curtain's Bottom Corner to Improve Drainage and Avoid Mold GrowthMold usually grows in shower curtains when water does not dry properly on the end of the curtain tucked into the shower enclosure. To combat this sew a small ring onto the corner of the curtain and mount a hook inside your shower area where you can hang the ring to facilitate proper drainage.

Instructables user mole1 found that by sewing a ring onto the curtain and attaching an adhesive hook that any excess water on the surface of the curtain dripped toward the drain. You should be able to find the proper shower curtain ring for a buck or two and spend about the same amount for an adhesive hook. Just attach the ring on the hook after you get out of your shower and you'll have much less water retained on the curtain, but keep in mind you still need to wash your shower curtain once or twice a year.

Alabama terror case could hinge on relationships

(AP) ? The terrorism case against an Alabama man accused of planning to wage violent jihad in Africa may hinge on just how well he knew a man on the FBI's most-wanted terrorist list.

Federal prosecutors portrayed Randy Wilson as an Islamic radical who wanted to reunite with Omar Hammami, an American who also grew up in Alabama but has since become one of the most well-known jihadists in Somalia. Wilson and another American who lived in Alabama for the last year, Mohammad Abdul Rahman Abukhdair, are accused of plotting to leave the country to join Islamic radicals fighting in North Africa.

The two men were arrested separately about two weeks ago in Georgia. Abukhdair was taken into custody at a bus station; Wilson was arrested as he was about to board a flight to Morocco.

Wilson's attorney has described him as a devout Muslim who was taking his family to Mauritania to study Islam, not wage jihad. Public defender Domingo Soto also said Wilson didn't live with Hammami, 28, about a decade ago, as the FBI has said, and the attorney questioned how well the two knew each other.

FBI agent Tim Green confirmed in federal court earlier this month that the information in the charging affidavit that Wilson and Hammami were roommates was incorrect and he wasn't sure where it came from.

It wasn't clear whether Abukhdair has an attorney yet.

Wilson, 25, has a wife and two young children. He was known around his neighborhood in Mobile, along the Alabama coast, for his big yard sales. He was friendly and outgoing, neighbors said.

Court documents, interviews with acquaintances and a sworn statement by an FBI investigator paint a picture of Wilson's troubled childhood.

Debra Lynn Weaver and Randy Lamar Wilson married in Mobile in 1986 and had Randy Jr. nine months later. Wilson's father was arrested on drug charges in the first of a string of scrapes with the law, and his mother filed for divorce four months later, when he was 1.

Wilson's mother remarried an Egyptian man when he was 5. She converted to Islam with the marriage, and her son eventually became Muslim, too.

Ashfaq Taufique, president of the Birmingham Islamic Society, remembered first meeting Wilson when he was attending an Islamic school.

"I knew him as a Muslim as a young boy," said Taufique. "He went by Randy and Rasheed."

Soto said Wilson client has never been in trouble. While attending a Muslim school in Birmingham, he was offered prestigious scholarships to study abroad at places including Saudi Arabia, Soto said.

Shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he became roommates with Hammami, who was the president of the Muslim Student Association at the University of South Alabama, the FBI said.

He was quoted in a campus newspaper talking about the attacks.

"Everyone was really shocked. Even now it's difficult to believe a Muslim could have done this," he told The Vanguard.

Hammami later wrote in an online autobiography that he already had turned toward radicalism by that time and privately praised Allah for the attacks.

Hammami later went to Egypt and joined Islamic insurgents, becoming a spokesman in videos and blogs.

He has since fallen out of favor with leaders of the Somalian terror group al-Shabab, which issued a statement recently distancing itself from Hammami, whom it accused of "a narcissistic pursuit of fame."

In 2010, Wilson met Abukhdair online, according to the FBI. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Abukhdair moved to Egypt in February 2007 to study Arabic, the FBI said. He was among a group of people arrested in Egypt in 2010, on suspicion of being involved with a terror group there.

He was put in prison for two months, and then he was deported to the U.S. last year.

He lived in South Carolina and Ohio, before coming to Mobile in late October 2011 according to an FBI agent's sworn statement.

Agents already were watching Abukhdair and Wilson by then. The FBI said Abukhdair moved in with Wilson's family and gave the Friday sermon at a mosque in Mobile about a year ago.

Leaders at the mosque didn't return telephone calls seeking comment, and a worker shooed away a reporter who visited.

The FBI said it kept tabs on the pair through an undercover operative. Wilson "described Hammami as a friend and showed the (undercover operative) an al-Qaeda video on his laptop praising jihad and the downfall of the West," the FBI said.

Wilson and Abukhdair began concocting ways to travel to Africa to join in jihad, an agent wrote.

Wilson, the FBI said, believed he would receive "special treatment" in Somalia because of his connection with Hammami.

"In addition to travel plans, they discussed their joy that Omar Hammami is now on the FBI 'Most Wanted Terrorists' list, and were excited that he is now even more famous," said the FBI statement.

Wilson lived next door to Tom Rothaar for two years. Rothaar said he was a friendly neighbor and who would have frequent yard sales with items he bought in bulk from big-box retail stores.

Rothaar said he was "staggered" by Wilson's arrest and tried to make sense of it during a 5-mile run.

"I couldn't," Rothaar said. "The only thing I can think is all the typical clich?s about how I cannot believe he was living next door and seemed so normal."

Top 10 Sustainable Business Stories of 2012 - Andrew Winston ...

It's time once again to try and summarize the last 12 months in a handy list. But before I dive in, some quick thoughts.

It was an odd year for green business, and it began with some mixed signals about how far companies were coming on sustainability. A GreenBiz report indicated that progress had slowed or even regressed, but MIT and BCG also declared that sustainability had reached a "tipping point" with more companies putting sustainability "on the management agenda."

In reality, both views were right. Corporate sustainability lost some of its sexiness from previous years, as it grew more entrenched in day-to-day business. Some parts of the agenda ? eco-efficiency and resource conservation for example ? are widely accepted now, and it's rare to find a big-company CEO who doesn't have sustainability on his or her radar.

The mega forces driving sustainability deep into business ? such as climate change, resource constraints, and transparency ? are getting stronger. We may not be keeping pace with these pressures, but leading companies continue to evolve more sustainable strategies and tactics. Let's look at some top macro- and company-level stories.

Macro Trends

1. Historic drought and Hurricane Sandy sweep away (some) climate denial
For many people this year, climate change moved from theoretical to painfully real. Mega weather took many lives and cost over $120 billion in the U.S. alone ($50 billion for the drought, $71 billion for Sandy). After Sandy raged across the eastern coast, Businessweek blared on its cover "It's Global Warming, Stupid." New York Mayor Bloomberg, a Republican, endorsed President Obama in the election, titling his open letter, "A Vote for a President to Lead on Climate Change."

As bad as Sandy was, the relentless drought across the middle of the country may prove more convincing in the long run. Corn yields per acre fell 19%, food prices rose, and water disappeared ? the Mississippi River may soon struggle to support commerce. Individual companies are feeling the bite: analysts at Morningstar estimate that input costs at Tyson Foods will rise by $700 million ? more than its 2012 net income.

Over one-third of the world's largest companies surveyed by the Carbon Disclosure Project are already seeing the impacts of climate change on their business. So with life-and-death consequences and vast costs, we must have moved quickly to tackle climate change, right? Sort of...

The year ended with the failure, yet again, of the international community to come to some agreement on climate change. But country-level and regional policy moved forward: Australia passed a carbon tax, South Korea approved carbon trading, and California just began its own trading experiment.

Many countries also committed serious funds to build a clean economy: Saudi Arabia pledged $109 billion for solar, Japan declared that a $628 billion green energy industry would be central to its 2020 strategy, and China targeted $372 billion to cut energy use and pollution.

In the U.S., a backdoor approach to climate policy took over. The Obama administration issued new standards to double the fuel economy of cars and trucks, and the National Resources Defense Council (an NGO) proposed using the Clean Air Act to reduce emissions from power plants by 25%.

2. The math and physics of a planetary constraints get clearer
Arithmetic had a big year: Nate Silver's nearly perfect predictions of the election gave him the oxymoronic status of rock-star statistician. The math and physics of sustainability got some serious attention as well.

Writer and activist Bill McKibben wrote a widely-read piece in Rolling Stone about climate math ? how much more carbon emissions the planet can take ? and followed it up with a national awareness-building tour. Based on similar numbers, both McKinsey and PwC UK calculated how fast we must reduce the carbon intensity of the global economy (PwC's number is 5% per year until 2050).

And on the resource constraint front, Jeremy Grantham, co-founder of the asset management firm GMO ($100 billion invested), continued his relentless numbers-based assault on the fallacy of infinite resources. In his November newsletter, he demonstrated exactly how much of a drag on the U.S. economy commodity prices have become.

Nobody can really deny that, in principle, exponential growth must stop someday. Grantham, McKibben, and many others are making the case that someday has arrived.

3. The clean economy continues to explode
The rapid growth of natural gas production (the biggest energy story of the year) and the high-profile failure of one solar manufacturer (Solyndra) have confused people about the prospects for clean tech. In reality, the clean economy is winning. The share of U.S. electricity coming from non-hydro renewables doubled to 6% in the last 4 years. On May 26, Germany set a world record when it produced 50% of its electricity needs from solar power alone. In a mini political tipping point, six Republican senators publicly supported an extension to the wind production tax credit in the U.S. (which will expire in days), and got an earful from a Wall Street Journal editorial.

It wasn't just energy. One auto analyst declared 2012 the "Year of the Green Car," with more high-MPG models, 500,000 hybrid sales in the U.S., and plug-in sales up 228%. To cap the year, the pure electric Tesla Model S was selected as the Motor Trend Car of the Year.

Company Stories

This year, there were countless eco-efficiency stories about companies saving millions of dollars and developing new tools to make buildings, fleets (Staples and UPS, for example), and manufacturing much leaner. Aside from that overall theme, the following stories grabbed me because of their connection to larger trends.

4. The green supply chain gets some teeth: Walmart changes incentives for buyers
This year, Walmart finally added a key element to its impressive green supply chain efforts. The retail giant's powerful buyers, or merchants, now have a sustainability goal in their performance targets and reviews. For example, the laptop PC buyer set a goal that, by Christmas, all of the laptops Walmart sells would come pre-installed with advanced energy-saving settings. It was by no means a hiccup-free year on sustainability issues for Walmart, with deep concerns about corruption in its Mexican operations. But the subtle change in buyer incentives is a big deal.

5. Transparency and tragedy raise awareness about worker conditions
Early in 2012, Apple took some serious heat for the working conditions at Foxconn, the giant company that assembles a huge percentage of our electronics. Later in the year, tragedy struck Dhaka, Bangladesh when a fire at the Tazreen Fashion factory killed or injured hundreds of people. The company that owns the factory serves Walmart, Carrefour, IKEA, and many others (but in fact, some companies didn't even know that Tazreen was a supplier). It's unclear if any of these human and PR disasters will affect the companies downstream, but transparency and knowledge about the lives of the people who make our products will continue to rise.

6. Data gets bigger and faster: PepsiCo and Columbia speed up lifecycle assessments
The rise of Big Data was an important theme in business in general this year, but especially in sustainability. And nowhere is good data needed more than in the onerous and expensive task of calculating a product's lifecycle footprint. PepsiCo has had great success with the method, finding ways to reduce cost and risk for key brands, but execs wanted to apply the tool across thousands of products. To make the exercise feasible and affordable, they turned to Columbia University, which developed a new algorithm for fast carbon footprinting. This isn't just a wonky exercise: As PepsiCo exec Al Halvorsen told me, "the real reason you do an LCA is improve the business, to put more efficient processes in place, and innovate in the supply chain."

7. Sustainability innovation opens up: Unilever, Heineken, and EMC ask the world for help
This new world of social media, where everyone has a voice, can be tough on companies. Consumers can gather around a green issue and pressure companies to change their behavior. Some notable change.org campaigns this year challenged Universal Pictures (about its green messaging around The Lorax), Crayola (recycling markers), and Dunkin' Donuts (Styrofoam cups). But companies can also use "open" innovation tools to generate new ideas and invite the world to solve problems together.

Unilever, which has my vote for leader in corporate sustainability right now, held an online discussion or "jam." Then the company posted a list of "Challenges and wants" and asked for ideas on solving big issues such as how to bring safe drinking water to the world's poorest regions. Unilever has received over 1,000 ideas and is "pursuing 6 to 7 percent of these with internal teams." Other notable open innovation models this year included Heineken's $10,000 sustainable packaging contest (which yielded some very fun ideas like a roving tap truck) and EMC's eco-challenge with InnoCentive on e-waste.

8. The economy gets a bit more circular: M&S, H&M, and Puma experiment with closing loops
On the heels of Patagonia's "Don't Buy This Jacket" campaign (one of my top 10 stories from last year), British retailer M&S began a program called "Schwop" that asked customers to bring back old clothes every time they bought new ones. This month, H&M also rolled out a global clothing collection and recycling effort.

Puma, after making last year's list with it's Environmental P&L, kept the momentum going and announced a new "InCycle" collection with biodegradable sneakers and shirts, and recyclable jackets and backpacks. Remanufacturing has been around a long time, but closing loops is getting more popular every year.

9. Dematerialization gets sexier: Nike's knitted shoe shows off sustainable style
Keeping the apparel theme, um, running, check out Nike's new shoe with FlyKnit technology. The upper part of the shoe is constructed from a single strand, which greatly reduces waste and lightens the shoe dramatically. It's a great thing when a more sustainable design also coincides perfectly with customer needs. Enough said.

10. Zero becomes more the norm: DuPont, GM, and John Elkington show the way
The idea that organizations should send zero waste to landfill was once a niche idea, but it's quickly becoming the ante to enter the waste management game. Announcements on waste may not be exciting, but they demonstrate how companies can turn a cost center into a source of profit. DuPont's Building Innovation Products business reduced its landfill waste from 81 million pounds to zero in three years. GM announced that it would ramp up its already extensive waste reuse and recycling efforts, which are now generating $1 billion a year. And a plug for a fellow writer: In a new book, sustainability thought leader John Elkington made the case that the future would belong to the "Zeronauts," the "new breed of innovators determined to drive problems such as carbon, waste, toxics, and poverty to zero."

Five Questions For 2013

Some other promising stories are in the "too early to tell" stage, but bring up some key questions:

1. Can we standardize sustainability, which some smart folks began to do around rankings (GISR) and accounting (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board)?

2. Will we find a way to value externalities like ecosystem services and internalized, intangible benefits? (A focus of some of my work as an advisor to PwC US). For example, Microsoft launched an internal carbon tax and some major companies (Coca-Cola, Nike, Kimberly-Clark, etc.) pledged to value natural capital at Rio+20.

3. Will government get in the way or help, like when the U.S. Senate allowed the military to keep investing in biofuels?

4. Hertz and B&Q (Kingfisher) have delved into collaborative consumption (see WWF's Green Game-Changers report), but will the sharing economy make a dent on sustainability issues?

5. Finally, how much will we challenge the nature of capitalism, and what will that mean for how companies operate? (This is the focus of my next project.)

So many stories, so little time... on to 2013. Happy holidays and have a safe and wonderful New Year!

Westboro Baptist Church?s Tax-Exempt Status Challenged

Westboro Baptist Church?s Tax-Exempt Status Challenged

Protesters from Westboro Baptist Church.

By Tracy Bloom

Despite its vitriolic activities and protests that are political in nature, the hate group Westboro Baptist Church has somehow managed to keep its IRS tax-exempt status. But after its publicly announced plans to picket the funerals of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting ?to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment,? as church spokeswoman (and daughter of its pastor, Fred Phelps) Shirley Phelps-Roper tweeted, tens of thousands of people have signed petitions hoping to change that.

Three petitions have popped up on the White House?s We the People site to investigate and strip the bigoted organization of its tax-exempt status. All three have garnered the more than 25,000 signatures needed for the Obama administration to review them. A separate petition calling on the White House to legally classify the Topeka, Kan.-based WBC as a hate group has also reached the threshold for an official White House response, with more than 185,000 people signing it as of Tuesday morning.

Some of these petitions have been promoted online by the hacktivist collective known as Anonymous. The group targeted Westboro Baptist Church on Monday, hacking its website, taking over Phelps-Roper?s Twitter account and releasing personal information about the church?s members on the Internet.

Of the three tax petitions, the ?Investigate the IRS Tax-Exempt Status of the Westboro Baptist Church? one has gotten the most people to sign it so far. It states:

?The Westboro Baptist Church is better-known for homophobic displays, suing people and picketing funerals than for providing Christian care to a community. Due to their harassment and politicking, their IRS tax-exempt status should be immediately investigated.?

Another petition asks the Obama administration to remove the group?s 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and make it retroactive. That one reads:

The WBC is not and should never have been considered a legitimate church for tax-exemption purposes, and this could be declared so either directly or with legislation affirming any or all of the following:

1) The WBC does not engage in any charity comparable in scope to their public image. They are only known for hate.

2) The WBC is not inclusive of its surrounding community, restricting membership. It is regarded by some as a tax shelter for its family?s law operations.

3) The WBC uses invective speech under its name, actively denigrating classes of people?soldiers, homosexuals, and others.

Lastly, a third petition asks for both the removal of Westboro Baptist?s tax-exempt status and to have the organization reclassified as a hate group. According to the petitioner:

Westboro Baptist Church is legally recognized as a religious organization and therefore receives a tax exempt status under our laws. The Phelps family and their supporters use these tax exempt funds to finance a country-wide campaign against any person or group they feel promotes values that do not meet with their own. Most prominently they are anti-gay.

... By granting their tax exemption WE ARE FUNDING THEIR HATE. This must change.

All of this raises some important questions about the organization?s tax-exempt status, including?and perhaps most notably?why the group has been allowed to keep it in the first place. As Slate explained in 2011:

Because they avoid direct advocacy. Nonprofits are allowed to hold opinions on public issues, of course. Only overtly political activities (electioneering, for example) are forbidden. The easiest way to lose 501(c)(3) protection is to contribute to a candidate?s campaign, whether through funding, stated support, or the contribution of office space. But the WBC has never made such mistakes. While Phelps and company do target specific political figures such as Hillary Clinton and Al Gore, they keep their criticisms ad hominem (Gore is apparently a ?famous fag pimp?).

Likewise, although a church may devote only an ?insubstantial amount? of time or resources to lobbying, the WBC is careful to eschew pronouncements on specific legislation. They stick to ?we hate homos? as opposed to ?we support Prop 8.?

As Slate notes, the IRS has the power to revoke the church?s 501(c)(3) status only if it finds Westboro Baptist is operating for ?mostly nonreligious purposes??for instance, if it?s involved in political causes and activities.

What?s clear now is that petitioners outraged that Westboro Baptist Church doesn?t pay federal income taxes have gotten the White House?s attention on this matter. Now it?s time for the Obama administration to respond.

Fitness And Chips | Semico Spin

By Michell Prunty
For most of 2012 Semico has focused on how new data is driving the consumer industry. This isn?t just for servers or cloud storage, but also for smart phones and tablets. New ways of interacting with our devices, like augmented reality, are becoming increasingly more available to the average consumer via the processing capability in our phones.

With all this advanced technology surrounding us, its no wonder that we?re moving back to the basics?of a sort. Self-improvement is the next driving force behind innovation. We?re already seeing some quite popular products hitting the market. Many of these new self-improvement products are really just new display options for infographics, enabling us to personalize our obsession with data.

Of course, the new fitness craze isn?t just for people looking to improve their health. We?re gravitating toward fitness products so we can understand our bodies and how the environment affects us. There are a million and one questions that data mining our every day lives can answer?and they all have an impact on semiconductors and semiconductor manufacturing.

  • Why did that athlete lose their last tennis match?
  • Why did one swimmer come in third instead of first? What did the guy in first place do differently?
  • How do the different types of foods we eat affect our weight gain or loss?
  • What are my best fitness records and what do I need to do to beat them? What are my friend?s?

It is said the millennials are all about ?me, me, me,? and this fitness craze certainly lends credence to that idea. But, as a society, there are also many health concerns around our current population, and how that population is going to grow between now and 2030. In addition, with the current recession and stagnant economies, the health industry is looking to cut costs and focus on preventive measures.

So maybe it?s not just a fitness craze after all. Semico believes the portable healthcare and ?Aging in Place? industries are going to experience huge growth, and be the focal point for another shift in how consumers interact with their environment and technology. The following are a few statistics about why this market is going to be so important.

  • About of 11% of the world population is over 60 years, and that percentage is expected to increase to 14% by 2020. That percentage will be closer to 30% in many industrialized nations.
  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States will have 65 million more obese people by 2030. And according to the U.S. Institute of Medicine, today?s annual cost of obesity-related illnesses is over $190 billion.
  • 35.7% of adults were obese in 2010 according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control.
  • University of Tennessee says the average adult takes 5,117 steps per day, half of the U.S. Surgeon General?s recommendation.
  • Americans spend $2.8 trillion a year on health care, according to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The Center estimates that $765 billion a year is wasted in some form or another.
  • Almost 70 million Americans are inactive.
  • About 80% of the worldwide healthcare spending is on chronic disease management, with 860 million patients.

This is one of the largest target markets available, because it includes us all, all age types, cultures, and regions. And it not only requires a focus on the portable fitness side, but also on medical infrastructure, education, monitoring, and equipment. This means electronics to store medical records; electronics for more accurate surgeries; fitness tracking and health monitoring.

All of these involve semiconductors, and many of these chips will require process technologies and techniques that range from older and proven techniques at older nodes to double patterning, finFETs and ultimately 3D stacking. If you wonder what will drive future advances in semiconductor design and manufacturing, you may not have to look any further than the person next to you.

Investing.com Domain Purchased for an Historic $2.45 Million ...

A memorable domain name means a lot for a business?s traffic and overall success. That?s why financial website Forexpros.com has purchased the domain name Investing.com for a whopping $2.45 million.?

The purchase of Investing.com marks the largest known sale of a domain name in 2012, beating out dudu.com and personalloans.com, which each sold for $1 million. In 2011, Salesforce?s purchase of social.com was the largest sale at $2.6 million. The huge price tag of Investing.com also makes it the 26th largest website sale in history.

Forexpros.com will use the domain to launch a global financial portal, which will act as a resource for novice and semi-professional traders and investors. The site will offer quotes, charts, breaking financial news, tools, calendars, and technical analysis for investors.

?Our goal is to be a one-stop shop for active financial traders and investors worldwide by providing streaming real-time data, powerful analysis tools, and the most user-friendly and language-accessible site of its kind,? said CEO and founder Dror Efrat.

Investing.com?s easy to remember, accessible domain name will help to drive traffic. The site plans to differentiate itself from the likes of Bloomberg and Reuters by offering ?premium? content for free, focusing on novice investors rather than pros, and making its content available in 18 languages.

Currently, Investing.com boasts 70 workers and has offices globally, including Madrid and Tel Aviv. Forexpros.com, founded in 2007, grew to 3.6 million users per month, but the founders recently realized the domain name was no longer accurate for conveying the site?s vast data and tools for across all asset classes.

The purchase of the new domain will likely combat any previous branding problems. Keep your eye on this site as it continues to spread globally in 2013.
