Mechanism behind wear at atomic scale

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Wear is a fact of life. As surfaces rub against one another, they break down and lose their original shape. With less material to start with and functionality that often depends critically on shape and surface structure, wear affects nanoscale objects more strongly than it does their macroscale counterparts.

Worse, the mechanisms behind wear processes are better understood for things like car engines than nanotech devices. But now, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science have experimentally demonstrated one of the mechanisms behind wear at the smallest scale: the transfer of material, atom by atom, from one surface to another.

The research was conducted by Tevis Jacobs, a doctoral student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Robert Carpick, department chair of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics.

Their research was published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

On the nanoscale, wear is mainly understood through two processes, fracture and plastic deformation. Fracture is where large pieces of a surface break off at once, like when the point of a pencil snaps off in the middle of a sentence. Plastic deformation is what happens when the surface changes shape or compresses without breaking, like when the edge of knife gets dull or bent.

These mechanisms typically affect thousands or millions of atoms at a time, whereas nanoscale wear often proceeds through a much more gradual process. Determining the mechanisms behind this more gradual process is key to improving such devices.

"At the nanoscale, wear is a very significant problem," Jacobs says. "Nanotechnology is developing smaller and smaller parts for very tiny machines. Their contact interfaces wear out very quickly, sometimes surviving for hundreds of cycles when they need to survive for trillions or more."

One wear mechanism that had been hypothesized for the nanoscale is a process known as atomic attrition. There, atoms from one surface are transferred to the other surface via a series of individual bond-forming and bond-breaking chemical reactions. Other researchers have attempted to test this process by putting two surfaces in contact and sliding one against the other.

Those previous investigations involved Atomic Force Microscopes. Using an AFM involves dragging a very sharp tip mounted on a flexible cantilever over a surface while a laser aimed at the cantilever precisely measures how much the tip moves. By using the tip as one of the surfaces in a wear experiment, researchers can precisely control the sliding distance, sliding speed and load in the contact. But the AFM doesn't visualize the experiment at all; the volume of atoms lost from the tip can only be inferred or examined after the fact, and the competing wear mechanisms, fracture and plastic deformation can't be ruled out.

The Penn team's breakthrough was to conduct AFM-style wear experiments inside of a transmission electron microscope, or TEM, which passes a beam of electrons through a sample (in this case, the nanoscale tip) to generate an image of the sample, magnified more than 100,000 times.

By modifying a commercial mechanical testing instrument that works inside a TEM, the researchers were able to slide a flat diamond surface against the silicon tip of an AFM probe. By putting the probe-cantilever assembly inside the TEM and running the wear experiment there, they were able to simultaneously measure the distance the tip slid, the force with which it contacted the diamond and the volume of atoms removed in each sliding interval.

"We can watch the whole process live to see what happens while the surfaces are in contact," Jacobs said. "Then, after each pass, we use the TEM like a camera and take an even higher magnification picture of the tip. We can trace its outline and see how much volume has been lost, down to as small as 25 square nanometers, or about 1250 atoms.

"We are measuring changes in volume that are one thousand times smaller than can be seen using other techniques for wear detection."

While this new microscopy method can't image individual atoms moving from the silicon tip to the diamond punch, it enabled the researchers to see the atomic structure of the wearing tip well enough to rule out fracture and plastic deformation as the mechanism behind the tip's wear. Proving that the silicon atoms from the tip were bonding to the diamond and then staying behind involved combining the visual and force data into a mathematical test.

"If atomic attrition is what's happening," Carpick said, "then the rate at which those bonds are formed and the dependence on contact stress -- the force per unit area -- is well-established science. That means we can apply chemical kinetics, or reaction rate theory, to the wear process."

Now that they could measure the volume of atoms removed, the distance the tip slid and the force of the contact for each experimental test, the researchers could calculate the rate at which the silicon-diamond bonds form under different conditions and compare that to predictions based on reaction rate theory, a theory that is routinely used in chemistry.

"The more force the atoms are under, the more likely they are to form a bond with an atom on the opposing surface, so the wear rate should accelerate exponentially with additional stress," Jacobs said. "Seeing that in the experimental data was a smoking gun. The trend in the data implies that we can predict the rate of wear of the tip, knowing only the stress levels in the contact, as long as this wear mechanism is dominant."

For now, those predictions can only be made about the wear of silicon on diamond in a vacuum, though the selection of those two materials was not accidental. They are common in nanoscale devices and tools for nanomanufacturing.

The math behind the atomic attrition mechanism could eventually be applied in a fundamental way.

"The goal of this avenue of research is to get to the point where you tell me the materials in contact, and you tell me the period they are in contact and the stresses applied and I will be able to tell you the rate at which atoms will be removed," Jacobs said.

"With a fundamental understanding of wear, you can cleverly design surfaces and choose materials to make longer lasting devices," Carpick said.

This fundamental, predicative understanding of wear could vastly improve nanomechanical design, increasing functionality and decreasing costs.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation's Nanomanufacturing Program and Penn's NanoBio Interface Center.

Why every scientist needs an online profile ? ConservationBytes.com

hideIt astounds me every time I hear about a scientist who is reluctant to place her or his track record on the internet. Now, I may be a little over-the-top when it comes to my own web-presence (some have labelled me a ?media tart?, but I don?t mind), but I am convinced that without a strong, regularly updated web presence, you?re doing yourself a horrible disservice.

Let?s go through the regularly raised objections that some academics make for avoiding the investment in a strong web presence:

  1. My employer will get angry
  2. My track record isn?t good enough (i.e., I?m embarrassed)
  3. What I do is no one else?s business
  4. I couldn?t be bothered; it?s too much work
  5. No one reads it anyway

While there might be some truth to items 1 & 2 (although the justification is weak or often plainly untrue), the last three are pure bullshit.

Let?s start by analysing the bullshit (rolls up sleeves, starts digging?).

It?s no one else?s business

How wrong can this perspective be? First, almost all science (especially in Australia) is publicly funded. Forget the modest contribution of real scientific advances made by industry (I?m focussing on published, peer-reviewed outputs here) ? most research is funded by the taxpayer. So you not only have a responsibility to let people know what you do, you have a duty to do so. Second, if you?re that arrogant to think that sciences is only a personal endeavour, you are possibly contributing to the increase in science illiteracy and denial among the general public ? shame on you.

Too much work

Again, I beg to differ. Most people at least have some semblance of a list of their publication record tucked away somewhere on their personal computer. If you?re an academic, you are in fact obliged these days to report your scientific output to your university, to your funding agencies and to your research partners. It?s really little effort to update a webpage with this basic information. I?m not saying that blogging or tweeting is everyone?s cup of tea (nor is it strictly necessary), but at the very least, a quick overview of your projects and publications (with linking URLs) is a bare minimum.

No one reads it

Unless you are a scientist who (a) never publishes, (b) never gets grants, (c) isn?t looking for work and/or (d) doesn?t do much at all, then this contention is utterly false. Pretty much every time I review a manuscript or a grant application, I google the researchers involved (at least the lead investigators). When I can?t find their history, I get frustrated, generally become grumpy, and am probably less likely to give a positive review. And let?s not even go there if you?re looking for a job. Even with your CV and publications list in-hand, as a selection committee member, I will ALWAYS google you. When I find that you haven?t even bothered to put yourself on the web, chances are you won?t even make the interview list.

Of course, there are also the other obvious advantages of having an online profile. When a journalist requires some expert opinion, she generally searches online (just like everyone else these days). When a policy wonk needs some advice, he does the same thing. In fact, your web presence is THE PRINCIPAL means by which people get to ?know? you ? the internet has replaced all other search methods in this regard.

Now some comments on the first two points:

My employer will get angry

Yes, some employers (e.g., CSIRO, almost all government departments) are particularly nervous about their employees talking about what they?re paid to do (go figure), but none that I am aware of prevent their employees from bigging themselves online. After all, it?s the reputation of the institution that?s at stake, so it should welcome positive stories. At least a statement of what you do and a list of your achievements should not piss off even the most paranoid employer.

My track record isn?t good enough

This might be true, but it should never, ever stop you. In fact, your track record and your internet presence are intimately tied together (e.g., in the ways described above about manuscript and grant reviewing), so a downward spiral develops if you hide yourself away; in other words, your track record isn?t likely to improve if you?re internet-shy. If you?re an early-career researcher, then this perspective is ridiculous. Of course you probably don?t have a stellar track record yet - it takes time to develop. When I google an ECR online I will always take age and experience into account, so don?t worry about it.

A few other pointers on building your web presence:

  • While your institution?s web pages might be cumbersome, out-of-date, and nearly impossible to update, there are many alternatives. I am flabbergasted that so many scientists haven?t yet discovered Google Scholar; for the sake of your career, spend 10 minutes and get yourself a Google Scholar profile! There are other web services for this sort of thing, like Researcher ID (a bit cumbersome and incomplete), ORCID, Research Gate, Academia.edu, Linkedin, etc., so you have plenty of free services from which to choose.
  • Free blog sites (e.g., WordPress, Blogger) are common and can easily be used as personal or professional websites. You don?t necessarily have to blog with them.
  • Facebook can act as a professional website.
  • I?m also of the opinion that a strong media presence is a necessary component of a successful academic career. I won?t blather to much about that here, but see this previous post about expanding your media profile.
  • Finally, avoid putting up semi-naked photos of yourself on Facebook, or going on some ill-advised rant on someone else?s blog or news site. If most people knew just how easy it was for others to cyber-stalk them, they wouldn?t document all their foolishness online. Remember, we?re watching you.

MIO Alpha BLE

Heart rate, as athletes know, indicates fitness and exercise intensity better than most other metrics. Until very recently, the only reliable way to measure heart rate was to wear a chest strap, as I did while testing the Digifit iCardio Multi-Sport Heart Rate Monitor. I can say from personal experience that they're not only uncomfortable, but also require another device to read their output, and try doing that while maintaining speed and watching where you're going. A new wristwatch, the MIO Alpha BLE ($199 direct) reads heart rate through an optical sensor on its back and displays it in real time. Simple as that.

For running, cycling, and plenty of other endurance sports, the Alpha represents a huge upgrade in comfort and ease-of-use in heart rate monitors. It includes a number of useful features and settings, too, such as stopwatch functionality during which you can record your heart rate and keep track of your time spent in the zone (between the low and "up" heart rate you set for yourself). Considering the $200 price, though, the MIO Alpha BLE is somewhat expensive. Because I follow the rapidly growing field of activity trackers and other personal fitness gadgets, I wanted the Alpha to do a little more, such as measure distance traveled or steps taken, which it does not. You can get some of these stats by pairing the MIO with a compatible app, such as MapMyRun or RunKeeper, but I'd ideally like to see a pedometer-like reading right on the device itself.

Design
Much more comfortable than a chest strap, the MIO Alpha looks like a chunky sports watch, with a pliant, durable silicone band. The watch face, available in two accent colors, "shadow" (black) and "arctic" (white), displays data in large format using a negative dot matrix LCD, which makes it easy to read even in strong sunlight. On both the left and right of the watch is a single button that's flush against the watch face, for navigating the features and changing the settings.

It also comes with a USB charging station for the rechargable lithium polymer battery, which attaches magnetically to the back of the watch.

I find the device rather attractive, and especially like the row of three holes in the band, for securing with a three-pronged clasp, that travel its entire length. The MIO Alpha should be worn a little higher on the arm and more snugly than a typical watch, as it needs to be in close contact with your skin to accurately read your heart rate. Of course, when you're not taking your heart rate, you can readjust it to wherever it's most comfortable.

How it Works
The MIO Alpha BLE works by using an optical sensor, located on the back of the watch, to read the volume of blood under your skin, and therefore take your pulse. The heart rate function does not run constantly. You have to turn it on and off. Press and hold the right side button, and it will read your current heart rate, displaying it on the watch face in real time. When you?re not taking your heart rate, the MIO Alpha displays only the time.

Accuracy
In testing the MIO Alpha BLE, I took several readings of my resting heart rate just to get a sense of how the device worked and found it to always be within two beats per minute of my own reading (using the rudimentary two-fingers-to-the-neck method).

Then, I wore the watch to the gym and took a few more readings that I compared with the readings from the hand-grip sensors on some cardio equipment, which are sometimes accurate and sometimes ghastly off. I jumped on an elliptical trainer, took a few readings using the hand sensors to make sure they were at least within the range of my expectations (they were), and worked up a sweat. I turned on the Alpha MIO and started comparing. Every reading was once again within two beats per minute. Impressive.

Additional Features
The button to the left of the watch face activates additional features that make the MIO Alpha BLE a true athletic gadget. You can adjust your minimum and maximum desired heart rate (it defaults to 110 to 130 beats per minute), and while you're working out, the Alpha will beep if you're not in the desired zone. It also flashes a colored light to indicate whether you're over (red), under (blue), or within (green) the zone you set.

You can also turn on a stopwatch feature that lets you time an activity while reading your heart rate in the background, which is where the colored lights and audio cues really help, as you can hear them and see them from the corner of your eye without slowing down to focus on the precise reading.

To integrate your heart rate stats into other data from health and fitness apps, you'll need a mobile device with Bluetooth 4.0, and one of the following compatible apps: Adidas MiCoach, Endomo, MapMyRide, MapMyRun, RunKeeper, Strava, or Wahoo Fitness.

While the watch is waterproof and you can even swim while wearing it, the instructions warn against pressing the watch's buttons while underwater. You'll need to turn on the heart rate function and set up the timer before hopping into the pool.

Pricey, but Among the Best
I highly recommend the MIO Alpha BLE over a chest strap for any athlete or fitness buff looking to add heart rate to their personal data measurements. For the price, however, I do wish it had at least one or two more features for tracking activity directly, although for the time being, at least you can pair it with an app.

If in its second or third iteration the MIO Alpha can add a few key personal fitness tracking features, such steps taken and total distance traveled, it might be a five-star product. The question is whether it will get there first, as the competition is fierce?which is a good thing for consumers.

What sank a Confederate submarine?

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) ? Scientists say a pole on the front of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley designed to plant explosives on enemy ships may hold a key clue to its sinking during the Civil War.

The experts are to release their findings Monday at a North Charleston lab where the hand-cranked sub is being preserved and studied. The Hunley was the first submarine in history to sink an enemy warship.

The pole, called a spar, was once placed at the front of the sub and used to plant a powder charge into the Union blockade ship Housatonic in 1864.The Housatonic sank, while the Hunley and its eight-man crew never returned.

The sub was found in waters off South Carolina in 1995 and raised five years later. It's been in the laboratory ever since.

Egypt: 110 injured in 2nd anniversary protests

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's emergency services say 110 people have been injured in clashes between police and protesters during rallies marking the second anniversary of the revolution that toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime.

The two sides clashed throughout the day Friday in Cairo, Alexandria, the cities of Suez and Ismailia on the Suez Canal and a string of others, with police firing tear gas and protesters responding with stones.

A statement by the emergency services did not give details on the types of injuries or specify in which cities they took place.

The clashes pointed to Egypt's volatility and divisions nearly two years after Mubarak's ouster, with the country now defined by a struggle between ruling Islamists, and mostly secular and liberal opponents who say Islamists are moving to take complete power.

The broadband initiative would accelerate the creation of a critical mass of markets and innovation hubs with ultra-fast Internet speeds.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has set a new national goal of at least one-high speed Internet service in each U.S. state by 2015.

Signaling the start of the second Obama administration, Genachowski told the winter meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C., of his new ?Gigabit City Challenge,? a call to establish these gigabits-per-second Internet communities in the nation within two years.

He said the Internet initiative would accelerate the creation of a critical mass of markets and innovation hubs with ultra-fast Internet speeds. ?American economic history teaches a clear lesson about infrastructure,? he said. ?If we build it, innovation will come. The U.S. needs a critical mass of gigabit communities nationwide so? that companies can develop next-generation applications and services that will drive economic growth and global competitiveness.?

Speeds of 1Gb/s are approximately 100 times faster than the average fixed high-speed Internet connection. At 1Gb/s speeds, connections can handle multiple streams of large-format, HD content like online video calls, movies and immersive educational experiences.

Networks cease to be hurdles to applications, so it no longer matters whether medical data, HD video or online services are in the same building or miles away across the state.

Genachowski said gigabit communities spur innovators to create new businesses and industries, spark connectivity among citizens and services, and incentivize investment in high-tech industries. Today, about 42 communities in 14 states are served by ultra-high-speed fiber Internet providers, according to the Fiber to the Home Council.

The FCC chairman did not propose government funding for his proposed Internet expansion. Financial conditions in the world today make ambitious programs like the development of NASA in the Kennedy years or the Interstate Highway System in the Eisenhower era highly unlikely.

Yet, to help communities meet the Gigabit City Challenge, Genachowski announced plans to create a new online clearinghouse of best practices to collect and disseminate information about how to lower the costs and increase the speed of broadband deployment nationwide, including to create gigabit communities. He proposed working jointly with the mayors on the best-practices clearinghouse effort.

The FCC, Genachowski said, will hold workshops on gigabit communities. The workshops will convene leaders from the gigabit community ecosystem ? including broadband providers, and state and municipal leaders ? to evaluate barriers, increase incentives and lower the costs of speeding gigabit network deployment. Together, the workshops will inform the Commission?s clearinghouse of ways industry, and local and state leaders can meet the challenge to establish gigabit communities nationwide.

He noted that in Chattanooga, TN, a local utility deployed a fiber network to 170,000 homes. Thanks to the city?s investment in broadband infrastructure, he said, companies like Volkswagen and Amazon have created more than 3,700 new jobs over the past three years in Chattanooga.

In Kansas City, he said the Google Fiber initiative is bringing gigabit service to residential consumers, attracting new entrepreneurs and startups to the community.

The Gig.U initiative, he added, has already catalyzed $200 million in private investment to build ultra-high-speed hubs in the communities of many leading research universities, including a recent joint venture with the University of Washington and a private ISP to deliver gigabit service to a dozen neighborhoods in Seattle.

The FCC?s Broadband Acceleration Initiative, Genachowski said, is working to expand the reach of broadband by streamlining access to utility poles and rights of way, and improving policies for wireless facilities and other infrastructure.

Gigabit communities can also benefit from tens of thousands of miles of critical ?middle mile? fiber infrastructure funded throughout the country by the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program run by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The Commission?s Connect America Fund, the largest ever public investment in rural broadband, includes funding for high-speed broadband to anchor institutions such as schools and hospitals.

Guys on Girls, Season 2

Donald Glover in Girls. Donald Glover as Sandy, Williamsburg?s young black Republican on Girls

Jessica Miglio/HBO.

In interviews, Lena Dunham is unfailingly polite?even when criticized. When Terry Gross questioned her about her show?s failure to have any prominent characters of color in its first season, Dunham said she was excited that Girls had prompted ?a dialogue about topics that I feel are important,? that she wanted to avoid ?classic network tokenism,? and that the series would definitely be ?more diverse? in its second season. When Emily Nussbaum asked her about the charge of ?nepotism,? Dunham said, ?I had plenty of counterarguments, but it?s not elegant to share them.?

Those are impeccably civil, I-hear-what-you?re-saying responses. Then there?s what Dunham & Co. have actually done in the first two episodes of Season 2, much of which has a here?s-what-I-think-of-your-criticism feel to it. (Spoiler alert: I think that?s a good thing.) It?s entirely possible she and her fellow writers and producers decided to do these things without a single thought for what anyone else has said about the show. But I wonder.

She cast her mother in a speaking role.
The accusation of ?nepotism? is one of the silliest that?s been made against Girls. (In fairness, people levying that charge may not know what nepotism is.) Yes, Dunham?s parents are both successful artists who live in Manhattan, and that surely gave Dunham a leg-up in life in a variety of different ways, helping her, ultimately, to where she is today. But HBO did not green-light Girls because Laurie Simmons? gallery shows have been reviewed in the New York Times.

For the most recent episode, Dunham cast Simmons, her mom?who is not a professional actor?in a large speaking part, as if to say, ?You think I got this show because of my mom? Well that?s funny, because I happen to have my mom right here. And I?m giving her work?not the other way around.?

She has taken her clothes off, a lot.
Lena Dunham is an attractive 26-year-old woman; that she is frequently naked on pay cable should probably not, in 2013, be a big deal. But it is. Just read through the comments below the first post in this TV Club, and count how many of them are about Dunham?s nude body. You will probably lose track. Many people continue to say that she takes off her clothes too much on the show. So how does she respond? By doing it even more, if that?s possible. And as long as people are getting weirdly upset by it, that?s probably the right response.

It also seems to be having an effect, by the way. In a recent New York Magazine profile, Mike White, creator (and co-star) of the excellent Enlightened, also on HBO, says that he was inspired to strip down for his show by watching Girls. ?I didn?t want to be in my underwear,? he says, ?but after seeing Lena Dunham?s nooks and crannies, I had to put it out there.?

She gave herself a black boyfriend, and then wrote him off the show.
The casting of Donald Glover as Sandy, Williamsburg?s young black Republican, seemed at first like a possible capitulation to critics (though producer Jenni Konner has said they were ?in talks? with Glover well before such criticism arrived). And who knows, perhaps his first lines??You wanted this and now you?re fucking getting it??were not at all addressed to critics who demanded that Dunham cast actors of color.

But consider Sandy and Hanna?s break-up scene. She asks if he?s read the personal essay she gave him. He demurs, then confesses that he read the essay and didn?t like it. Nothing really happened in it, he says?it was like reading ?all the nonsense that goes through your brain when you?re just trying to kill time ? It wasn?t for me.? Hannah pretends she?s perfectly happy to hear these things, then steers the conversation to an obviously delicate topic: their divergent political views and the incredible rates of incarceration among black men. Sandy sarcastically thanks her for enlightening him about the plight of minorities. Seconds later, their relationship is history.

Hannah Horvath, character, and Lena Dunham, writer, have grown farther apart as the series has progressed. But the former is still the latter?s alter ego, and Hannah?s personal essays will always have a meta-fictional connection to Girls itself. When Sandy says that Hannah should not try to inform him about the difficulties faced by black men?just after the two discuss whether her essays are ?for? him?Girls seems to be saying that this show, like Hannah herself, is a foolish place to turn to for enlightenment on that subject.

Glover was great in the role. And I suspect we have seen the last of his character.

Gen. Allen's Nomination Back on Track

A day after the Pentagon cleared Gen. John Allen of any wrongdoing in email exchanges with a Tampa socialite, his nomination to take over as NATO's supreme allied commander is back on track.

Currently serving as the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, Allen's nomination was placed on hold last November when the Pentagon inspector general began an investigation into his conduct.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said at Wednesday's White House briefing that President Obama has decided to go forward with Allen's nomination.

"The investigation is now complete," said Carney. "We welcome its findings. And, therefore, we intend for the nomination to proceed."

Carney expressed hope that the Senate would consider the nomination "in a timely manner. And you know, we will press the Senate to do just that."

A spokesman for Allen released a statement saying the Marine general "was obviously pleased by the outcome" of the inspector general's investigation.

The Pentagon inspector general investigated whether Allen's email contacts with Tampa socialite Jill Kelley were inappropriate. Kelley was at the center of the scandal that led to the resignation of David Petraeus as CIA director after his extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, came to light.

Kelley had contacted law enforcement to investigate a series of anonymous harassing emails later determined to have come Broadwell. After wrapping its investigation, the FBI referred to the Pentagon 20,000 to 30,000 documents of exchanges between Allen and Kelley that it felt needed further investigation.

Maj. David Nevers said Allen was informed that "the allegations against him were unsubstantiated and did not violate the requirement of exemplary conduct or the prohibition against conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman."

According to Nevers, Allen had "placed his faith in and fully supported the investigative process. He's obviously pleased by the outcome."

He described Allen as being "grateful for the support he received throughout this process from his chain of command, friends, family and colleagues. He remains focused, as he has always been, on leading the brave men and women of the ISAF team."

Allen is expected to turn over command of NATO forces in Afghanistan on Feb. 10 to Gen. Joseph Dunford, who has already been confirmed by the Senate.

What Happens to Sex After Marriage? ? Larry James ...

Lori & Bob Hollander, Guest Authors

Most people would agree that sex after marriage changes. It?s easy to see why. If you ate cr?me brulee once in a while you?d look forward to it, dream about it, desire it. But if you had it every night, well, it would be less exciting. You?d take it for granted.

After marriage, life settles into a routine. Couples become more comfortable, some let themselves go.

Hormones and bodies change, sex becomes less of a priority and new responsibilities abound. Everything comes before sex ? careers, children, housework, meals, laundry and bills. Energy is stretched, time becomes a precious commodity. When you can catch a breath, you wonder, how connected are we? Am I still attractive to him? Will I get rejected if I ask for sex and on and on.

It?s vital for couples to recognize and understand the reasons that sex after marriage will inevitably change. So what is a couple to do?

? Most importantly, talk about it, take it on, address it, communicate
? Go on dates to focus on each other and reconnect
? Do connecting acts of love every day
? Carve out time for sex and schedule it if you have to
? Plan short trips to get away from the routine
? Remember studies show, ?the more you do it, the more you?ll do it.?

Sex in a committed relationship is a crucial part of the head, heart, hormone connection. With consciousness, communication and caring, loving intimacy in a committed relationship can last forever. And, by the way, it gets better after the kids launch, that is, if you have stayed connected. So hang in there.

Red Hot LoveNote? There is no such thing as a natural born lover. Learning how to make extraordinary love is something that takes practice. People who want their sex lives to be great are most likely happy to hear this. Learn more. Do more. Have more fun. Take your sexuality to new heights. There is always something new to learn about sex. That something new always feels good. Discover things together. New technology shows diabetes

Jan. 21, 2013 ? A new imaging method for the study of insulin-producing cells in diabetes among other uses is now being presented by a group of researchers at Ume? University in Sweden in the form of a video in the biomedical video journal, The Journal of Visualized Experiments.

Professor Ulf Ahlgren and his associates at the Ume? Center for Molecular Medicine (UCMM) have developed technology for biomedical imaging with optical projection tomography (OPT). Initially the method could only be used on relatively small preparations, but five years ago the scientists at Ume? were able to adapt the technology to study whole organs including the pancreas from adult mice. The present findings describe a further development of the OPT technology by going from ordinary visible light to the near-infrared spectrum. Near infrared light is light with longer wavelengths that can more easily penetrate tissue. Thereby, the developed imaging platform enables studies of considerably larger samples than was previously possible. This includes the rat pancreas, which is important because rats as laboratory animals are thought to be physiologically more similar to humans.

This adaptation, to be able to also image in near-infrared light, also means that the researchers gain access to a broader range of the light spectrum, making it possible to study more and different cell types in one organ preparation. In the article the scientists exemplify the possibility of simultaneously tracking the insulin-producing islets of Langerhans as well as the autoimmune infiltrating cells and the distribution of blood vessels in a model system for type-1 diabetes.

Internationally, huge resources are being committed to the development of non-invasive imaging methods for study of the number of remaining insulin cells in patients with developing diabetes. Such methods would be of great importance as only indirect methods for this exist today. However, a major problem in these research undertakings is to find suitable contrast agents that specifically bind to the insulin producing cells of the pancreas to allow imaging. In this context, the developed Near Infrared -- OPT technology can play an important role as it enables the evaluation of new contrast agents. It may also be used as a tool to calibrate the non-invasive read out by e.g. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

This is now going to be tested in the newly launched Marie Curie project "European Training Network for Excellence in Molecular Imaging in Diabetes," which links together five major EU-funded research consortia with different cutting-edge competences in the field.

The developed techniques have contributed to the reasons why the research team recently received a SEK 4.3 million grant from the EU in a Marie Curie program to link together leading research teams in Europe in the field of diabetes imaging.

TWTD.co.uk | McCarthy After Home Improvement - Ipswich Town News

McCarthy After Home Improvement
Saturday, 19th Jan 2013 06:03

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says Town need to play better against Barnsley if today?s game at Portman Road goes ahead than they did in their home games against fellow strugglers Bristol City and Peterborough, both of which ended in 1-1 draws.

McCarthy said: ?Our worst performances were against Bristol City and Peterborough. But we can?t change that, we?re playing against Barnsley, who are beneath us [in 23rd] and there will be people turning up expecting us to win.

?But it doesn?t always work like that, a bit like at Cardiff last weekend, a bit like Bolton, a bit like Wolves when we went there.

?The league?s on its head, the league?s completely bonkers, I haven?t got a clue how to work it out, except to just get enough points to keep us up.

?If it?s a point against Barnsley, it?s a point against Barnsley, and if it?s three points next week at Bristol City or wherever we get them [I?ll take them]. We prepare to play well against Barnsley, but it might not happen.?

Questioned whether he?ll be looking to add more creativity to his side before the transfer window closes on January 31st, McCarthy said: ?It?s funny isn?t it? We drew 0-0 at Cardiff and suddenly I need some creativity and bullets for the lads up front!

?I thought we created some. I think we?re playing well, I think the team looks solid and you can sometimes lose that bit of solidity, get a bit of creativity and you get slapped by a couple of goals.

?Or [we can] keep what we?ve got because I?ve been here for 15 games and [before that] we were shipping goals, we didn?t look solid.

?That?s my team, that?s the way I am, that?s how we play and I think we?ve created enough chances in most of the games that we can score goals. And that was the case at Cardiff, we could have nicked it in the end.

?I think we had the better chances in open play, they had a lot of freekicks and corners. I?m happy with the team, I?m still looking to add, and we can get better [by doing that].

?I think the players already here have got better through playing, through a bit of confidence, a bit of belief, through getting some points, getting some wins. And I still think there?s more to come from them. I?m delighted with the way things are going so far.?

The Blues boss has been pleased with the spirit shown by players coming off the bench, recently citing the substitute performances of Michael Chopra and Daryl Murphy and last week debutant Frank Nouble?s late cameo at Cardiff.

?Without that you can?t really have a successful team because the team that plays week in, week out needs that back-up from players who, when they come off the bench, they come off it to make a difference, whether it?s to save a point, get the points, kill a game, win a game or whatever the circumstances might be,? he said.

?They go on and affect the game positively, not negatively, they?re not going on and being a chump and having a long face and showing everybody their displeasure at being on the bench.

?You should come on and you show everybody that you?re trying to make a difference, then you?ll get another opportunity with me. If you do the former, you?ve got no chance.?

The 53-year-old says no one particularly made a case for inclusion in his first team during Monday?s 2-1 U21s victory at Charlton: ?We actually got mullered for the first 25 minutes, they actually played well, Charlton.

?What was nice was that it showed that there?s a bit of toughness in the team. They stuck at it and then Patrick Kisnorbo scored from a header from a corner kick.

?Jay Emmanuel-Thomas scored the second but it would have been difficult not to having been set up by Frank, he just rolled it into his path and it was a sidefoot into the net.

?It was just all right, it was OK, Nobody?s knocked me out, they all did what they had to do. Neither trialist, [Moldovan international defender Petru Racu and Banbury United winger Kynan Isaac], is staying. They?ve both gone back.?

New Brain Monitor Aims to Alert Doctors When Patients Wake During Surgery

Jan 17, 2013 5:29pm

While under general anesthesia during an emergency Caesarean section, Angela DeLessio?s eyes were closed and her body was unable to move, but she remained?fully conscious.

?It was like a searing pain,? DeLessio told ABC News recently. ?I felt like I was being burned. ? I was awake as I am right now and having surgery ? both with feeling and sensation and mental awareness, exactly the way I am now except I was paralyzed. It was terrifying.?

Her doctors had no way of knowing that DeLessio was experiencing anesthesia awareness and was feeling everything.

But a new approach that could monitor consciousness may provide a breakthrough.

Dr. Giulio Tononi, a neuroscientist and psychiatrist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, believes that the electrical signals ? sight, sound and pain -spreading across the brain create consciousness. During surgery, anesthesia stops the signals from spreading, making a person completely unconscious.

Tononi?s new awareness monitor stimulates the brain with an electrical current and then looks to see whether the signal has spread. In a truly unconscious brain, the signal would not spread; in a brain aware during surgery, the signal would.

?You don?t want the patient to move, to feel any pain, to have any memory [during a surgical operation],? Tononi said. ?You?re actually injecting current to the brain and finding out whether the various parts of the brain are talking to each other or not.?

Experts say anesthesia awareness occurs because anesthesia is more of an art than a science. It?s more common in women and runs in families. According to the International Anesthesia Research Foundation, for every 1,000 patients under general anesthesia, one or two will be aware.

?It?s a frightening experience,? DeLessio said. ?It really does affect somebody?s life a great deal.?

Details of Tononi?s work are available in the Atlantic magazine currently on newsstands.

Analysis: After Algerian incident, West Africa fears Mali spillover

DAKAR (Reuters) - By seizing hundreds of hostages at a gas plant in the Algerian desert, al Qaeda-linked militants angry at French intervention in Mali sent a clear message: they could strike anywhere in the Sahara.

Many experts now believe the sight of a former colonial power leading unprepared West African armies into war against Islamists in Mali could spark similar attacks across a swathe of smaller, more vulnerable nations to the south.

Islamist fighters who escape the French onslaught are likely to scatter, with some remaining in Mali to fight a guerilla-style war while others trickle across its porous borders into countries where pockets of radicalism already exist.

"This could lead to frustration amongst Muslims towards the French," said young Senegalese man Adama Sall, leaving afternoon prayers at a mosque in the Senegalese capital Dakar.

"In any intervention there is collateral damage, there are innocent people who could die. This could radicalize people."

Security experts have traditionally played down the threat of radical Islam across West Africa apart from Nigeria, where Boko Haram militants operate.

They cite the moderate form of Sufi Islam which predominates across the region, its largely open if ineffectual governments, and the limited number of past attacks by fundamentalist groups.

But the crisis in Mali has radically changed the dynamics in a region where a growing number of international firms operate, ranging from mining and petroleum to transport and construction.

Al Qaeda-linked groups which seized control of Mali's north had time to organize, recruit and rearm last year as regional governments wasted time trying to prise apart their alliance by offering talks to Ansar Dine, one of its main factions.

African nations now face the challenge of tracking groups of mobile Islamists across virtually meaningless borders while monitoring threats from radical Islam at home.

Paris had long pledged to back an African intervention in Mali but was determined to avoid French boots on the ground for fear of being painted as a crusading force. But images of French troops and armor in Mali are being beamed across the world, inflaming sentiment among some Muslims.

Aaron Zellin, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy who monitors jihadi forums, said Mali had overtaken Syria as the top subject of online discussion.

"A lot of these people are more like online cheerleaders," he said. "But this could lead individuals to put away the keyboard and pick up an AK47 instead."

MALI'S JITTERY NEIGHBOURS

Islamists have repeatedly warned they will strike regional powers or Western interests if attacked. With the Algerian gas plant drama still unfolding, the group claiming responsibility threatened foreign companies with fresh attacks.

Experts warn that if the Islamists can hit Algerian interests, protected by security forces hardened by a bloody conflict against Islamists in the 1990s, West African nations with ill-equipped and inexperienced troops look vulnerable to a militant threat that has become increasingly international.

Among the militants killed in the Algeria hostage siege, Algerian security sources reported there were Egyptians, Tunisians, Libyans, a Frenchman and a Malian.

During the months they occupied northern Mali, West African security sources say Islamists in Mali lured a range of foreign recruits, including significant numbers from sub-Saharan Africa, previously under-represented within regional al Qaeda factions.

In Senegal, a neighboring Muslim nation proud of its religious tolerance, Foreign Minister Mankeur Ndiaye warned this week that al Qaeda had set up sleeper cells in the country.

President Macky Sall called on all Senegalese to report suspicious activities by Muslims coming from abroad. "We must remain vigilant in our towns and villages as infiltrations exist," said Sall, who is sending 500 troops to Mali.

In Mauritania, bordering Mali to the west, both secular and Islamist parties across a deeply divided political spectrum have insisted the Islamic republic must stay out of Mali.

Before Islamists seized northern Mali, Mauritania was the country of the region most exposed to al Qaeda's activities. It has launched raids on Islamist camps across the border in Mali after attacks on its army and Western interests in the country.

"Mauritania will not get involved in the conflict," said Mohamed Yahya Ould Horma, vice president of the ruling UPR party. "We have already paid too high a price for acting alone against terrorist groups over the years."

Underlining the presence of radical thinking in a nation straddling Black and Arab Africa, a group of 30 Mauritanian religious scholars have called on Muslims across the region to protect jihadists from Mali.

"France wants to drive out extremists. But to where? Mauritania and Niger could be in trouble. Burkina Faso will face threats," said Kwesi Aning, an expert at the Ghana-based Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.

NIGERIA THREATENED

But it is Nigeria which could be the greatest concern. With the region's biggest oil reserves and economy, its security forces are already bogged down in on-off fighting with Boko Haram militants in the north.

Abuja has wavered between not wanting to overstretch its army by intervening in Mali and hoping the mission could stamp out links between homegrown and global militants.

By dispatching the first of 1,200 soldiers this week, President Goodluck Jonathan opted for the latter.

"They want to cut off the Islamist problem at the root," said Bismarck Rewane, CEO of Lagos-based consultancy Financial Derivatives. "Not only could it inflame things here, but in the long run it won't solve the problem of Boko Haram's insurgency, which is to do with inequality and poor governance."

Most West Africans, including the Malians themselves, have been largely supportive of French intervention while regretting the inaction of regional powers to come to Bamako's rescue.

However, the failure of democracy to improve daily life in some of the world's poorest countries has opened the door to Islamic organizations to play a bigger role.

Ultra-conservative Wahhabism, spread by preachers coming from the Gulf, has made inroads.

"This intervention (in Mali) makes the whole sub-region considerably more vulnerable," Aning added.

"We are going to see the spread of the fronts from Mali."

CISCO?s minimum hold is 31.5 per cent over the Security segment, which is still a substantial market lead. However, this success has not happened by chance; since its birth in the mid-80s, CISCO has kept one eye on the networking industry, the ever-evolving nature of the internet, and computing.

Considering and applying these market transitions within the design and development of their products, CISCO succeeds to be the preferred innovative force within the networking sector.
